So I'm walking to my car this morning. On my way to my car there is a high-rise and some guy started yelling (it was 7 am).

"Hey, faggot. Get the fuck out of the neighborhood you white cocksucker."
(various and sundry other curses yelled out)

I then looked around and couldn't see the guy. Then he yells, "Yeah you in the baby blue shirt, faggot." That was when I realized that instead of generalized cursing it was I, specifically, who was being cussed at. I kept walking.

"Yeah, run away you white cocksucker. We don't need your kind around here."

I feel so welcome. Great neighborhood spirit. No wonder I want to move.

7. A friend of mine

(who is married to a man, although admittedly bisexual) got verbally assaulted and maced in the face the other day by some random homophobic fundie psycho. She was just walking around downtown, and stopped at the Dairy Queen kiosk for a Blizzard, and this guy just ran up from out of nowhere, screamed "Fucking dyke, your kind need to get the fuck out of America!" and maced her right in the face. Then he ran off and the cops haven't found him yet. She's scared to come out of her house right now (she lives right downtown).

When I was assaulted, years ago, it took a few months for me to start to feel safe again. My dh helped by going places with me and staying close. I hope you can find time to accompany her to places when she needs to go out...shopping or the doctor's. It's esp. hard to go back to the place where the assault occured. For me, it was the post office (yes, I was attacked on government property. This is before they started outsourcing abuse!)
