House Democrats expand Abramoff probe By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jun 5, 7:27 PM ET

WASHINGTON - House Democrats are expanding their investigation into ties between jailed GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the White House and have contacted several Abramoff associates recently about testifying to Congress.

The contacts were disclosed Tuesday by a House Democratic aide and an attorney familiar with the matter who both spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is ongoing.

The aide declined to identify those the committee wants to talk to. Last month committee Chairman Henry Waxman D-Calif., indicated he intended to seek testimony from people who'd worked as lobbyists with Abramoff as well as from former and current White House and administration officials who might have knowledge of Abramoff's connections with the White House.

A committee spokeswoman declined comment. A message for a White House spokesman wasn't immediately returned.

Jack Abramoff and his pal Grover Norquist were bagmen for a steady stream of foreign money flowing into Republican coffers. Jack was rewarded for his role in Iran-Contra by being made the registered lobbyist for Pakistan at the time that it was illegally developing its own nuclear weapons and proliferating them to a number of other rogue states. He simultaneously lobbied for several of the largest defense contractors, and steered their money to the Republican Party. He was literally working both sides for the benefit of the GOP.

In recent years, Jack received millions of dollars from Russian Maffiya and ex-KGB/arms dealers, money which Jack funneled to the GOP through his Capitol Athletic Club - where's the US Attorney for DC on that one? Why didn't Paul McNulty, the former USA for the Eastern District of Virginia, follow up on the millions that Abramoff and Grover Norquist were squeezing out of Islamic Bankers? What about Norquist's role in assisting WAMY and other groups in Virginia that were being investigated for terrorist finance before 9/11, an investigation that was stopped shortly after Bush took the White House? Have these cases simply been put on indefinite pause because the Gonzales Justice Department has "other priorities"?
