4. this is...odd...thought-provoking.
Kerry publicly getting on the climate bus. You know, the bus Al Gore is driving. The two victims of Grand Theft, Election now figuratively traveling together.

Naaaah--I'm sure I'm making too much of this.

(And no, I'm not thinking of a Gore-Kerry ticket. That won't happen. But Kerry on board, still....)

6. You mean the bus that both of these people have been on
since the 1980's? The one that had them both at Global Climate Change hearings in the US Senate in 1988? Or the one that had both of these folks involved in international conferences on the environment and climate change all through-out the 1980's? You mean the John Kerry who wrote in Dec of 1998:

"I recently returned from Buenos Aires, where delegates from more than 160 nations participated in a vigorous 10-day conference to discuss ways the leading and developing nations of the world can unite to address the crisis of global climate change in forging a plan to move the global process forward. This success emerged in part from a consensus that the issues before us are real and the challenges we face are grave. But what is even more grave is the issue in this country of how we continue to shunt aside the pressing dangers of global climate change. Too often we cling instead to the discredited contentions of faulty science. We allow wild aspersions to masquerade as substance, clouding the reality that the vast consensus among scientists leaves no doubt of the threats of global climate change."
Boston Glob, Sen. John Kerry, Dec 6, 1998

You mean that recent bus? Or the one that goes back to 1970 and the first ever Earth Day, which John Kerry helped organize in Massachusetts. That is recent history for some of us, but it establishes as 37 years record of environmentalism for Kerry that is second to none in the US government, including former VP Gore. (A fact which Gore was only too happy to mention when Kerry ran in '04.)

7. Gee, I could've sworn...
when I picked up my old copy of Earth in the Balance the other day, there in the intro was a kudo to those Senators who joined with Gore in the FIRST committee hearing (or was it investigation) into global warming, back in the 80's - including Senators Heinz, Wirth, and JOHN KERRY.

Gee, I wonder why there's a quote from Al Gore on the back of Kerry's new book,

Both John and Teresa have been long time leaders in the battle to save the Earth's environment. Way back when it was not at all fashionable, indeed when very few people in the world were even paying attention to it, both John and Teresa were providing outstanding and courageous leadership.

I wonder which bus he was talking about?

10. I happily acknowledge Kerry's long-standing commitment to
environmental issues, and didn't mean to suggest in any way that he is a recent or opportunistic convert. I was musing on the timing of his public appearance on this topic at the National Press Club, just when Gore is making a splash around the country with Assault on Reason etc. In other words, is Kerry adding his weight to Gore's end of the political teeter-totter?

I'm an old-time fan of Kerry, since VVAW days, and I was around for the first Earth Day and all that.

that none of the announced candidates are "there yet" on this issue in terms of rhetoric and record. Coupled with Kerry's always mentioned praise for Gore as a visionary, sounds almost like a public comment implying support for Gore. (By adding record to rhetoris, this is not a criterion that a candidate can meet if they have no real record on this.)

More importantly, Kerry sent out a letter to his 3 million that included the link to join Gore's list. The letter also included Gore's praise for the Kerrys. So, clearly they are acting jointly - though their proposals differ in how to do this. The similarity is a sense of urgency.

13. Bush is at the G-8, talking about climate change
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 11:36 AM by TayTay
and trying to push the meme that he (Bush) is actually going to do something about global warming.

Sen. Kerry is speaking now because Bush is pedaling a bill of goods in Germany right now and someone should counter that.

9. Kerry has been on that bus since 1987
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 10:38 AM by karynnj
When Gore chaired the first hearing in the Senate on climate change. Kerry was on the committee as well.

It was not just campaign rhetoric when Gore at the 2004 convention spoke of Kerry having the best record on the environment in the Senate. Kerry along with Wirth and Heinz were key Gore allies on this for decades. In some of the Senate hearing this year, other Senators from Boxer(CA) to Carper(DE) to Inouye (HI) to Biden (DE) all praised Kerry on having been on the issue for climate change for decades while, as Biden, said few others were.

Kerry in 2004 had the environment and alternative energy as very major campaign issues - though the media preferred to give more time to the SBVT and Scot Peterson.
