Just a fun one: Let's put together our 2009 Fantasy Cabinet.
I'll start.

Ambassador to the UN: Big Dog

AG: John Edwards (I know he'd make a good president, but the idea of him as AG just makes me smile--he'd go after all sorts of stuff and clean house, and it would be a beautiful thing. :D )

SecDef: John Murtha

(Not Cabinet, I know) Senate Majority Leader: Obama (I think he does best there--feel free to diagree with me.)

DOE: Kucinich

I can't decide on the rest. Ideas?

1. I take it you think Hillary's going to take it?
Why Kucinich at the Department of Energy? Or what is the rationale there?

But Al Gore as Secretary of the Interior or head of the EPA might be good.

George Soros or Bill Gates (yeah I know Window's sucks) at Secretary of Commerce.

Bryant

4. I'm hoping Gore.
That would leave Mrs. Clinton in the Senate to help get things going there.

I think Kucinich would do the work that it takes at Energy to help us get going with a Manhattan Project-like initiative to get our country off of oil and onto other resources.

Sec. of Treasury: Bob Rubin
Sec. of Defense: _____

2. I think for SecDef I'd choose Wesley Clark
He is up on more current technologies.I would also be tempted to put Gore in DOE, if he would accept. Secretary of State - I would be tempted to appoint Biden.

6. Well, you can't.
Federal statute forbids it. To serve as Secretary of Defense, one must be a civilian - out of duty for at least 10 years. Clark retired in 2000. He's not eligible until 2010.

We'll just make him president and go from there. :)

He'd also be good at Homeland Security, I'd think, with his experience as a border governor.

Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 09:28 AM by MasonJar
and Wesley Clark as the Sec of State. We need some women in there so I see another woman as Attorney General. My first thought is Elizabeth Edwards if she is healthy enough. Murtha would be excellent as Sec of Defense or in charge of the VA. Bill Clinton at the UN sounds just right or Ambassador to the World at large. Definitely Bill Richardson. Gore does not want any Cabinet position; I saw him say so in an interview. I am not including Hill or Obama or Al, because one of them will probably be president and I do not know which. The other two need to help by leading the Senate or the war on global warming and etc. However, I do see Obama as a VP for Hill or Gore or perhaps Wesley.

19. Bill Clinton had a cabinet that looked like America...
and he was able to find very good women & minorities for his cabinet: Janet Reno, Madeline Albright, Bill Richardson, Ron Brown, Donna Shalala, etc.

George W. Bush has shown a remarkable ability to find incompetent & corrupt people of every race as well - Condi Rice, Alberto Gonzalez, Harriet Miers, etc.

When we did this in 2004, most DUers still ended up picking white males for their various cabinet posts - Wes Clark, Holbrooke, Spitzer, etc.

So, who are some top women & minorities that we can pick for key posts, including Supreme Court justice.

26. I was thinking of a woman for Surgeon General.
She'd have to be a member of Physicians for a National Health Care Plan, though. :) I can think of one, but I don't think she'd take the job. *sigh*

I like Conyers where he is, so that doesn't work. We had a great guy run for Michigan Atty General last time who didn't get it--I wonder if we could get him to take over some things. Heck, they should just hire him period and get him to clean things up.

What about press secretary? It would be nice to have a strong woman in that job (I hate to say it, but someone like CJ from West Wing).

20. Here are a couple of fantasy picks ....
IMHO we need to keep some Democrats exactly where they are right now --considering the excellent job they are doing. WE need top people in the Senate and the House to shepherd through important legislation that our Democratic President can sign.

People like Feingold, Kucinich, Kerry, Waxman, etc. all would be powerful forces right where they are. The positions they hold in the Senate and House might be shuffled and elevated, but we need our best to help change the direction of this country with legislation and funding by Congress.

I would put people in the diplomatic positions that the rest of the world already knows and respects.

I would send Bill Clinton to the United Nations, whether he has an official position or not. He is well-known by by other countries and could get things done there that would have a huge positive affect on our foreign policy needs. If Bill Clinton turned down the official position, Gov. Bill Richardson should get that position.

In tandem, I would name Wesley Clark, former Supreme Commander of NATO forces, as Secretary of State. I think he could speak with authority to negotiate with countries who are our allies, and with countries who oppose us.

Obviously Edwards, Clinton and Obama cannot all be President. The 'non-winners' in that group should hold important positions in any Democratic Administration, but since we do not know the winner I will not place them in any position here.

I like the idea of Eliot Spitzer as Attorney General. He would help restore the DOJ by rooting out corruption inside and outside government.

Those are just a few to start.

21. I would name Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head up the EPA ...
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 09:54 AM by Blackhatjack
Give him a budget three times the current budget and staff and turn him loose to restore the EPA and overturn all the horrible regulations that have been imposed during the Bush years.

Could be one of the most important positions in the new Administration given the decline in clean water, clean air, and the obviously big job of reestablishing regulation of Big Business.

39. My choices
Secretary of Defense: You guys are all pushin' for generals; I'm goin' with my buddy Raymond J. McKnight. McKnight was a sergeant major. This is the thing: McKnight has the bandwidth to understand the right thing to do nearly all the time, and he's enough of a prick to force you into his point of view if you can't see shit his way.

Secretary of the Interior: If we can't convince Brian Schweitzer to run for president, Secretary of the Interior would be perfect for him.

Secretary of State: The Big Dog.

National Security Advisor: LTG (Ret) Paul Menoher. You can read about both General Menoher and Sergeant Major McKnight at http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/army/tradoc/usaic/mipb/1998-2/HOFbios.htm.

Attorney General: Eliot Spitzer.

Special Attorney General for Locking Up the BFEE: John Edwards.

Secretary of Environmental Protection: Al Gore.

Secretary of Energy: Dennis Kucinich.
