1. 2 or 3.
His expression in #1 is too...something....but not leaderesque. Tentative, maybe.

And #4 is just a bad layout, IMO. Plus he looks like a marble statue.

32. He looks stern and ready to fight for justice!
I don't like the open-mouthed look in #3.

4. 3. I like the concept of 4, but he looks too artsy
like one of those street performers who paints themselves to look like a statue.

7. I like #4 if the blurr is removed and the flag solid in the background...
with his face in solid greyscale.

(Sorry, I'm a graphic designer, can't help it...)

8. I don't like any of them.
First one he looks scared. Second one he looks constipated. Third one he's baring his bottom row of teeth, too confrontational. Fourth has the best pic of him, but it also uses the flag. They all contain the flag. I view that as inappropriate use of the flag. Everyone does it thou, don't they, nowadays. Pisses me off anyway.
I do like that pic in 4 of him. It's strong and steady looking.

9. No. 2. The expression on Wes' face says it all: this country is in a dismal state.
And we could sure use this first-in-his-class West Point'er & Rhodes Scholar in the campaign line-up to try to clean up the mess.

I'd be equally as happy if Al Gore ran for the Democratic nomination.

10. speaking as a designer -- nothing good ever comes from focus grouping
that's no way to create good design. the general public ALWAYS picks the weakest design.

on the other hand, all of these designs are so weak that there's really nothing to lose from soliciting input. the first "design" is just a photo -- an unflattering photo at that. Second and third designs look like the sort of cover layout that might be thrown in free with your order of 1,000 copies of the book printed at a vanity press.

The last design is the strongest and will look the best in print (and at point of purchase) as opposed to on screen, but, I'd be surprised if the poll supports that.

11. #1: Looks pensive, frightened. #2:Passive, odd arm pose. #4: Matrix meets Greek temple? Blech!
So, I gotta go with #3. But that bit of hand showing
at the bottom? That should either show enough hand that
it is a recognizeable part of the composition, or crop
it out entirely.

I think this is a much better picture than any of those:

Nice natural smile, he looks very confident and at ease. That is a reassuring look in a leader.

17. Get rid of that flag or at least the gold braid hanging down.
That last pic makes him look like a ghost. Why do these men always have to have on a suit and tie? So boring. Why can't he be casual and outdoors with a National Park in the background. People are getting weary of yet another book with a guy in a suit and the flag in the background.

He was utterly HOT in that photo. :-)

Well, maybe this photo wouldn't be appropriate for the book cover, but I really think it's the most handsome photo of him to date.

22. Hmm I'm not a big fan of any of them really
And I think Wes Clark is hot, but he's not really looking straight at the camera in any of those shots. They need a shot of him looking right at the camera - that would be a good cover.

and the last picture makes me think of the photo I saw a few weeks back of Heath Ledger made up as the Joker from Batman. :scared:

35. But it fits Wes Clark, in many ways he is a straight arrow and
...in many ways he combines the best values of earlier decades coupled with a cutting edge vision for the future consistent with America's best values.

I am just as jaded as the next old lefty. I'm an old Hippie for chise sake. I spent many long days with friends mocking the straight and narrow straight jacket of the America of my youth. But cynisism is a double edge sword that cuts both ways and untimately also wounds those who wield it, as well as that which it is wielded against.

Clark is always sincere, and sincerity mixes with cynicism no better than oil and water. He walks his talk. One reason why that type of talk turned me off for so long is because I always heard it uttered by those who barely believed a word of it when it came to themselves.

With Wes Clark we finally have a chance to win political points in the side show culture wars that preempt significant discussion of real issues in America, without compromising any of our liberal ideals. That's the game Republicans have practiced for years, except rarely do they mean a word that they say. The words that they say are merely designed to win them votes in close elections.

Or, maybe they believed it, but certainly hadn't always walked the walk.

That's probably the thing that has kept me loyal to Wes Clark above all other candidates for the past 3 1/2 years... when he says the stuff about America that sends patriotic chills up your spine, it doesn't come off as cynical or jingoistic--it's the way the man truly feels about the country he's devoted his life to.

(And it's why I also love Conyers, Waxman, Kucinich, and others who honestly are motivated by their beliefs in justice, fairness, and democracy, not partisanship or power. There's just something about people who believe in what America could and should be, and are fighting the good fight....)

31. Here Are Some Tidbits From Clark's Book:
Courtesy of Gordon Suber at CCN:

"A TIME TO LEAD: For Duty, Honor and Country, written by Wes Clark with Tom Carhart

The book opens with a preface describing the lead-up to Clark being wounded in Vietnam, including riveting dialogue between Clark and the medic crouched over him as he lay bleeding in the jungle. “Sir, stay still! You’ve got a sucking chest wound, Don’t talk.” To which Clark replies, “Give me water! That’s what I need.”

As currently edited, there are fourteen chapters including, but not limited to: Getting Started, The Profession of Arms, Rebuilding an Army, Living the Strategy, Coming Home, and The Promise.

The unannounced first printing will be 200,000. Tom Carhart, a West Point graduate with two purple hearts from Vietnam and the author of five military history books assisted with the writing."
