Lynne Cheney, Susan Thomas Floated As Possible Replacements For Late Sen. Craig Thomas
By John Bresnahan

Jun 6, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(The Politico) Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, is being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the last Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), who died Monday night. Susan Thomas, the late senator's wife, has also been mentioned by Senate Republicans as a potential choice to take over for her husband, as well as former Justice Department official Tom Sansonetti.

One GOP insider said Lynne Cheney had been in Washington "too long" to be acceptable to the Wyoming GOP, despite her long resume, and Susan Thomas would not be interested in serving out her husband's term.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Dick Cheney, who attends the regular Tuesday policy luncheon by Senate Republicans, were spotted talking yesterday afternoon, but Enzi said Lynne Cheney was not discussed. In fact, Enzi said, he is not involved in any discussions related to Thomas' replacement..

6. What long resume? It can be summed up in six words.
Elected offices: none.
Appointed positions: none.

Six words.

There are many jobs for which she may be well qualified--and she gets bonus points for resisting the urge to rip the pacemaker out of Dick's evil heart while he sleeps--but the Senate is not one of those jobs.

16. A riveting tale of women in the American Frontier...
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 04:34 PM by Lobster Martini
"Waiting for Sophie was a world where women were treated either as decorative figurines or as abject sexual vassals...where wives were led to despise the marriage act and prostitutes pandered to husbands' hungers...where the relationship between women and men became a kind of guerilla warfare in which women were forced to band together for the strength they needed and at times for the love they wanted. In her effort to grasp the meaning of her sister's life and death, Sophie discovers the secret that tainted her life and begins to understand the experience of the vast majority of silent, trapped women.

Heck, this sounds way better than anything on PBS tonight--Ken Burns, we've found your next project!

9. Second Lady as Senator?
I seem to recall a huge outcry over Hillary Clinton's idea of running for the Senate. Could Mrs. Cheney be, perhaps, ambitious?

10. Before the election of 2000 was even decided
Lynne Cheney used to go shopping in Dallas, and had
about 5 black limos full of Secret Service guys, like
not only did she know the outcome beforehand, but she
insisted on taking full advantage to show off.

Her? Ambitious? Naaaaaaaaahhhh............

22. Yeah, we knew that
But to show up with an army of SS guys and a fleet of limos
still seemed like overdoing it to us, especially since she
still lived in Dallas right down the road at the time.

Protection, yes. A whole army division, no.

18. Tells me a lot about the state of Republican politics.
The same out-of-touch names keep getting recycled. No one else qualified to be a Senator in Wyoming? If I were a Republican in that State, I'd be asking why such a person, with no experience, is being rewarded with this position. The new aristocracy in action.
