Mass Grave Found of Jews Killed by Nazis |
|
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - Pipeline diggers unearthed a mass grave believed to contain thousands of Jews slaughtered in Ukraine during World War II, a Jewish community spokesman said Tuesday, a grim finding in a nation that one Holocaust expert described as "an enormous killing field." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070605/D8PIR60G0.html

1. Interesting how the Ukrainians are so sure it's Jews |
|
And not any of their own.
Because I never read where the Nazis thought eastern Europeans were good enough to live.

2. Kiev, Ukraine...50-50 chance the Soviets did this. They blamed |
|
the Nazi's for Katayin Forest massacre of Polish officers...turns out it was the Soviets who executed them.
In either case...it is something that should never have happened in the first place. Antisemitic forces have been around for eons, and is something this world should be ashamed of.

4. The Ukraine welcomed the Third Reich Occupation. |
|
After a few months they regretted that decision mightily.

|
with these people...Stalin was known for at least 12 million deaths...:(

7. Strangely,I just read a book called Hitler's Peace that used that massacre as a starting point. |
|
Even though the book was fiction it went into that a little bit.It seems Yeltsin apologized in '92 for the deaths of 4,000 Ukranians killed there, but the numbers taken prisoner and never accounted for was much, much higher.
A lot of people got caught between two madmen. :(

11. Oddly enough, the Germans were pretty upset of being accused |
|
of the Kaityen Forest massacre. Makes one wonder how a group that was responsible for millions of deaths, would get upset over a few thousand, and try to make an issue of it...
Regardless, it is another horrific incident that comes out of WWII...to me it makes no difference if these were Jews, Slavs, Russians, Germans...to slaughter people like that is beyond the comprehension of normal individuals. I know what it is to dehumanize an enemy, but the way things were during WWII on such a monumental scale, is beyond belief, yet it happened...:(

13. When I first read about the Holocaust it was so easy to paint the Germans as totally subhuman. |

What has ended up disturbing me the most the more I learned about it was just how "normal" they mostly were.Really no different from anyone you'd pass on the street for the most part.I think that realization is the most disturbing part of all.The evil turned out to be all too human.
Even now,I can see how easily hatred has been used to make killing the "other" an easy task.Look how many American's aren't even bothered by how many innocent Iraqi's we've killed. In many people's eyes they aren't human, and that seems to be all it takes to make doing the most horrific things acceptable.
That's the biggest lesson I've gotten from the Holocaust. It doesn't take a special kind of evil to do evil things. It's right there under the surface in any of us.

14. There were a LOT of Germans that thought Hitler was bad |
|
for Germany and the world. Reinhardt Neimoller was in the forefront of exposing them for what they were, and somehow, he survived the concentration camp fiasco.
Most who spoke out against Hitler and the Nazis were just plain abducted and outright murdered. Fear is a powerful tool when people see that death is the only option. Add to that the whole deal about "super-race" and all of the other crap, and you have a giant petri dish to grow what you want.
Happens all the time, the Patriot Act is no different than laws passed during Hitler's reign...:(
It is incredible that a modern nation like Germany, and others would follow that stuff...but if you look below the surface, we are right there w/them under bush...x(

9. Another chapter in an already incomprehensibly sad story. |

I do hope this discovery will at the very least provide a small amount of closure to some families.

10. I don't care who is in there. No one deserves this. I despair of man's |

inhumanity toward his brothers. Amazingly sad news.
