GOP congressional candidate denounces Iraq invasion (brother of pilot from 9/11)

Republican congressional candidate James Ogonowski, whose brother was an American Airlines pilot killed on Sept. 11, 2001, said today that President Bush "was wrong to invade Iraq."

While Saddam Hussein may have been a ruthless dictator, Ogonowski said there wasn’t evidence that Iraq was actively supporting terrorism or planning an attack against the United States.

"Although I think it was wrong to invade Iraq," said Ogonowski, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and the sole Republican vying to replace US Representative Martin T. Meehan. "It does not change my determination to win the war in Iraq. I will never waiver in keeping America safe and strong."

Ogonowski, 49, whose brother Captain John Ogonowski was piloting American Airlines Flight 11 when terrorists commandeered the flight, said American troops should return home only when "a stable and self-governing Iraq is in charge of its own security. Success is keeping our commitment to stabilization, democracy, and economic growth in Iraq, while removing American soldiers from the police-like duties they are engaged in on the streets."

Ogonowski is the only Republican seeking to succeed Meehan, a Democrat who has announced he will resign to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Five Democrats, most of whom strongly oppose the Iraq war, are also running for the seat. One independent candidate and one Constitution Party have also entered the race.

2. There are pockets here and there of repubs
And Bush nearly took 40% of the state in 2004. Right wing radio does very well. There are lots of different kinds of people from Massachusetts.
