Doesn't negate the ick factor of him boffin' a teenager who goes out without a bra in her nightie.

It was said in good fun and in the spirit of the OP which was, lest you forget, humorous in nature. The main thing that pisses me off about DU sometimes is that people take things SOOOOOOOOOOOOO seriously! Geez, people, lighten up! Not everything is doom and gloom, you know?

It's downright exhausting these days doing the PC Two-step so as to not trod on anyone's hypersensitive, "I'm offended by (fill in the blank)" toes.

4. You do know...
if we bring up the age difference between Thompson & his wife, Republics will shoot back with the difference between Ted Kennedy & his wife, Chris Dodd & his wife, Dennis Kucinich and his wife, etc, etc.
It's not like male politicians have never had wives that were much younger before Thompson came along.

Edited on Thu Jun-07-07 08:08 AM by NewJeffCT
If a Republican had an affair before today, they can write it off as a youthful indiscretion. Meanwhile, if a Democrat even looked at another woman in high school, it's a sign of a serious moral failure.

I don't look at all big age differences in a harsh light, but I will admit I'm a bit skeptical.

And, I guess since you judge age differences harshly, I'll have to give up my dream of you being my trophy wife!

68. oh, absolutely
it's a matter of degrees, to some extent. But the degree of the objectification of women, that's the thing that leads some entire cultures to wear burqas, and leads other cultures to feel superior cause they don't ... while the women in those "superior" cultures aren't able to walk down the street without getting harassed.

Just let me have my ass-kicking angel fantasies, okay?

54. Jealousy?
I think the jealousy here is found in the men who can't get a woman who looks even half as good as 40-year-old Jeri, but I digress.

Speaking for my female self, I'm not a bit jealous of Jeri's looks. I couldn't care less. My husband thinks I'm beautiful. My kids love me. I'm happy.

I'd like to have her money, though, so I could stay at home with my kids instead of having to slave their lives away at work.

The problem many of the female (and some male) posters have here is that some of you males seem to disregard Jeri's personal accomplishments because she has blonde hair and boobs. The woman isn't stupid. She's a media consultant for a high-powered DC firm. She has her own money and didn't need the likes of Fred Thompson in order to live quite well.

She's not a "child" bride. She's not a "gold-digger." She's not any of those degrading things many men use to describe women who seek to marry older men. I know Fred Thompson and, despite what you all may want to believe, the man is rather charming. I can see where a woman in her 40s might find him attractive in that manner, despite his less-than-appealing external features.

If we want to complain about Fred Thompson, then we need to be concentrating on his actions and not his wife. His wife will HELP him in his presidential bid amongst the very group of people we need to attract in order to flip some purple states and win the Electoral College - and that group would be white male swing voters.

Lastly, this is probably the 10th or 12th time this has been posted. It's getting rather old and stinking up the joint, particularly when the left has Ted Kennedy, Dennis Kucinich and Keith Olbermann - all of whom are married to or dating women many years their junior. It's, frankly, hypocritical.

i find these large differences in age, to come with power inequalities. especially given that men have more power in society to begin with. its because we live in a sexist society that this is considered normative behavior.

66. I think you're right
I think if power were more equalized, I still don't think you'd see a rush of older women looking hot young stud males. It might become a bit more common, but I still think the majority of relationships where there was a large age gap would be between an older man and a younger woman.

Odd thing - my 2nd wife is about 5 years older than my ex (first) wife, though she's still a couple of years younger than me.

57. A more recent photo...

Actor and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., talks with his wife, Jeri, at a fundraiser in Richmond, Va., Saturday, June 2, 2007. Thompson took the first formal step toward a widely expected bid for the presidency, establishing a preliminary campaign committee on Friday. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)

Interesting, Yahoo has evidently removed the above "mermaid" photo from May 1, 2006, from their file of Fred Thompson photos, and replaced it with the more recent photo above. She was evidently pregnant in the "mermaid" photo, as their second child was born in 11/06.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Thompson

Thompson married Jeri Kehn on June 29, 2002 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Naperville, Illinois, having first met her on July 4, 1996. Kehn (born January, 1967) is an attorney and a political media consultant at the Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, and McPherson law firm in Washington, D.C. She had formerly worked for the Senate Republican Conference and the Republican National Committee.

77. Mrs. Fred Thompson was actually 3 months pregnant in the "mermaid" photo.
Interesting, Yahoo has evidently removed the above "mermaid" photo from May 1, 2006, from their file of Fred Thompson photos, and replaced it with the more recent photo above. She was evidently pregnant in the "mermaid" photo, as their second child was born in 11/06.

Thompson married Jeri Kehn on June 29, 2002 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Naperville, Illinois, having first met her on July 4, 1996. 72. Can DUers please not stoop to Freeper-level bullshit ?
she's not a teenage stripper. She's a super attractive AND educated/successful 40 year old.

As a young man I wish women wouldn't go for for the older men so often but they do. I can't bash Fred Thompson (who isn't going to win the nomination) and not bash Ted Kennedy or any other old politician with a decades younger wife or girlfriend.

74. Amen
Some of the comments are also offensive to me because of the age difference of my parents.
