Why is it every time Congress is about to vote on EMBRYONIC Stem Cell Research, a MIRACULOUS new
study, that DOESN'T involve EMBRYOS, is published just days BEFORE THE VOTE??? This happened just before the last vote on embryonic stem cell research....think there's an agenda here?:grr:

Lets see how many repukes quote THIS article today while on the House floor.:eyes:

Skin cells made to act like stem cells
New method may transform debate on controversial topic.
By Malcolm Ritter, Associated Press
Article Launched: 06/06/2007 09:22:02 PM PDT

NEW YORK - In a leap forward for stem cell research, three independent teams of scientists reported Wednesday that they have produced the equivalent of embryonic stem cells in mice using skin cells without the controversial destruction of embryos.

If the same could be done with human skin cells - a big if - the procedure could lead to breakthrough medical treatments without the contentious ethical and political debates surrounding the use of embryos.

Experts were impressed by the achievement.

"I think it's one of the most exciting things that has come out about embryonic stem cells, period," said researcher Dr. Asa Abeliovich of Columbia University in New York, who didn't participate in the work.

But he and others cautioned that it will take further study to see whether this scientific advance can be harnessed for creating new human therapies. It's simply not known whether the mouse results can be reproduced with human cells.

Embryonic stem cells are prized because they can develop into all types of tissue. So experts believe they might be used for transplant therapies in people who are paralyzed or have illnesses ranging from diabetes to Parkinson's disease.<snip>

2. I heartily agree. They are extremely transparent.
Pro-lifers don't give a fuck about life, just control. I suggest any congressman who votes against stem cell research should be locked up in the Alzheimer's Ward of a poorly maintained nursing home for at least six months. They should get intimately acquainted with whom the bible thumpers want to control.

5. I couldn't agree more! I also think that any Congress person who votes against this should be

required to sign a legal document stating that IF embryonic stem cell research proves to be as promising as scientists believe it will be, THEY AND THEIR FAMILIES CANNOT BENEFIT FROM IT...EVER! Of course they would all sign it because none of them would ever want to use any treatment that was derived from a BABY.:eyes:

Those assholes would be the FIRST to use the treatment if it was for THEIR child, wife, husband, or parent.:grr:

6. Not only congressmen
but religious zealots as well should sign such a document. And you are right. Who would push their way to the head of the line to get treatment?

3. And of course, they aren't sure that it will work with human cells
oops, they put that near the bottom of the article.

4. Cells that have differentiated into specific tissues
can't be used the same way undifferentiated cells can be, that's the whole point of using cells that haven't progressed beyond the blastocyst stage. In other words, there are stem cells all over the place, but marrow stem cells can only produce various types of blood cell, in bone they can produce bone. In other words, their repertoire is limited.

They've trumpeted these new stem cell finds every time, only to find out the cells are still limited by differentiation. That doesn't stop them from trumpeting STEM CELLS STEM CELLS STEM CELLS! like they're equivalent.

They're not.

7. See your point, but If true, don't knock it!

What got me about this story was that the team of scientists were from other countries, working here in the U.S. That feeds into my belief that our society is becoming increasingly dependent on others outside the US for achievement and innovation, and our own people becoming stupider, lazy, infatuated with celebrity, disrespectful of intellect and academic success. (Or, simply put, as my husband would say:" That's why George Bush is president".) OK, that's a huge generalization, and unfair to many Americans who don't fit that bill, but I think there's some truth there.

8. I would be impressed if they could take skin cells and turn them into
embryos.
