1. Well, He's Wrong This Time
Because of the strain on the planet's natural resources by a human population increasing way past the Earth's carrying capacity, we are all going to have our current standard of living decreased anyway, no matter what. But purposefully allowing millions more people to come into the United States to contribute to our excessive consumption is madness.

If you want to save our species, if you want to mitigate the effects of global climate change, then the last thing we need are more folks here in the land of conspicuous consumerism.

I also suggest taking a look at this DU post from earlier this morning: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=103&topic_id=286645&mesg_id=286645

2. Read Bucky Fuller
There are viable solutions to humankind's plight of existence on this planet. It comes down to whether or not we want a society that is geared toward taking care of human beings and the environment or simply let profit making be the primary driver of policy.

3. You've stated the key right here...
"Because of the strain on the planet's natural resources by a human population increasing way past the Earth's carrying capacity"

Overpopulation is the real problem.

In the mean time, are you willing to get out at the crack of dawn and pick lettuce... or harvest grapes... or clean someone's house... or tend their garden?

6. Get Ready for It
The economy of the near future is going to be: LOCAL.

Because of overpopulation, climate change, and Peak Oil ... we are all going to have to plant and harvest our own lettuce/beans/wheat (or grow it locally and trade for it). We're going to have to clean our own houses. We are going to have to walk or bicycle or use mass transit to get around -- vacations to distant places will be a thing of the past (no more exploited foreign workers to change hotel room linens).

So, I suppose, in the end, there won't be any jobs for "guestworkers" anyway. The point, however, is that we can ease ourselves out of this over-consumptive lifestyle by making responsible choices now (ie, not encourging cross-border migration and displacement), or we can wait for it to happen to us ... whether we are ready or not.
