The Axis of Urban Evil

Derbyshire breaks it gently to Andy McCarthy:

Someone once called New York City "the capital of a country that doesn't exist." It's an odd sort of place. Personally, I love it, and it's made a great contribution to the USA. It is not, however, all by itself, the USA. In fact—you might want to sit down for this, Andy—large numbers of Americans hate New York.

While I am one of the multitudes who despise New York City, I would find it very difficult to decide which city I would rather see destroyed by asteroids, Biblical plagues or global warming: New York, Washington D.C. or Hollywood. It's hard to choose because America would be much better off without all three.

Strangely enough, I would be very sorry to see San Francisco swept beneath the waves. But while San Francisco is a freak show, it's not one that forcibly imposes itself on the rest of the country. The same is not true of the Axis of Urban Evil.

And they try to SCARE us with stories of ocean-swamped coasts....

PS: According to the comments on the post, he's not the only wingnut who would root for al Qaeda to hit us harder next time.

I think America would be much better off without maggot-ridden punks like him around, personally.

Salon linked to you -- that's who.

An intellectual response to such a mindless comment is completely unwarranted. You're quite simply an asshole.

There's a lot of places in the USA that I don't like, where I would never live, where I wouldn't even want to visit. But that hardly means that I think the country would be better off without them.

And the next time you cry boo-hoo-hoo because someone makes fun of rubes and okies, just remember that they are no more or less mindless than you are.

You would hate New York. You never leave the house. You would never get any joy out of mounting your bicycle in the early summer morning (noon, naturally), tooling over to the Bagel Factory for a toasted sesame with lox and a large House Blend, dawdling over the New Yorker and glancing over the New York Times.

You would never be suddenly inspired to head for the Brooklyn Bridge, instead of the usual loop around Prospect Park, via Cobble Hill. You'd get not a single frisson of delight out of boldly dodging traffic in Brooklyn Heights, passing the flower stands and the outdoor cafés, redolent with the smell of grilling bacon. You wouldn't take out your aggression on a fellow who has the gall to step into the street without looking, right into your path.

You'd find it tedious, pumping over the bridge onto the boardwalk above the traffic, clipping the elbows of tourists standing stupidly in the middle of the road with their digital cameras. You'd express neither wonder nor curiosity at the comings and goings of tugboats, barges, tankers and the odd cruise ship. The skyline rising up under the Gothic arches of the bridge would fill you with loathing.

You wouldn't have any friends to go and visit over at SVA, wandering through studios and offering friendly critiques. You'd have no basis for comparison, noting how friendly the folks seem to be today at the paint store--how friendly nearly everybody seems to be in general. Must be the weather.

It wouldn't occur to you to make your return journey via Gramercy Park and the East Village; you wouldn't stop at the Sidewalk for a snack, because you never would have been there before.

And crossing the Manhattan Bridge next to the trains, in the metal cage, would definitely drive you insane.

Such a pity. :-)

Good thing, since all the hate-filled liberals obviously are so mean and murderous in their pursuit of villainistic equality and brutal workers rights and meanspirited racial fairness that we can't even string a readable sentence together, unliek thum thar freepers smartees.

6. My reply is here.

I think this 'Christian' is simply suffering from a bad case of Envying Places That Are More Happening Than The Likely Backwards Shithole In Which He Lives. It's pretty common - many, many hayseed motherfuckers who don't understand the greatness of American cities and would be afraid to walk through Times Square in broad daylight mask their pants-wetting fear by claiming that New York (or DC, or Hollywood) are horrible, horrible places that deserve to be wiped off the map.

But I, like any good liberal, strive to understand the root cause of this brain-dead hick's hatred of the city (or greater metro area, to be more precise) in which I live. I have to chalk it up to terminal ignorance, a fatal misunderstanding of anything past his own outhouse, and a fear that one day he'll be forced to actually visit the marvelous cities which he dismissively wishes destruction upon.

And I might suggest that it might be beneficial - and educational - if he pulled the goddamn sheep's rear legs from out of his field boots, buttoned his overalls, jumped back on the 50-year old tractor that is his main means of transportation, and maybe booked a flight to one of the cities he wishes to be hit by wholesale destruction. Sure, he might have to sell off his stamp collection or pimp his sister to the boys down at the gas station to raise the air fare, but he'd probably actually like these cities if he stopped tipping the town cow and broadened his horizons a little bit.
