http://www.happynews.com/news/672007/one-nice-thing-thousands-blankets-delivered-iraq.htmThe following message is from a young combat medic, Sergeant Steve Stephens. He and six of his fellow soldiers in the 1st Cavalry Division launched "Soldiers Helping Those In Need - Iraq". They are asking for help from home so they can collect as many blankets as possible to give away to Iraqi refugees near Mosul.
Yesterday (May 19) we were successful in delivering 1,000 blankets to the refugees near Al Kush. When the convoy arrived we had five minutes to set up the security and then we went to work unloading the truck. By the time the tables were set up, there were people starting to come up the hillside. In total they had over 360 refugees waiting in line to receive two blankets per family. The refugees had come from the outskirts of Al Kush and own little, at best. Their homes were either burnt or destroyed by insurgents.
One recipient told me that he was starting to form a democratic council for his people, and he asked if the Army had bought the blankets for him and his people. I then smiled and told him, no sir, the blankets came from the kind people of America. He then hugged me and shook my hand. Not having too much time to soak in the moment, I went back to organizing and crowd control.
After three hours we were ready to head back, and a man stopped me before we could throw the boxes in the truck. He asked if they could have the boxes. I said "No problem", however curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask why. He informed me that they would burn the cardboard for fire and, in turn, it would help to make bread. They even used the boxes. There was nothing for us to take back to base with us except memories of giving to those in need.
