Immigration bill stalls in Senate
Edited on Thu Jun-07-07 08:43 PM by cal04
A White House-backed bill revamping U.S. immigration laws stalled in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, handing President George W. Bush a major legislative setback.

The sharply divided Senate refused to limit debate on the fragile compromise hammered out by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House. As a result, the legislation will be set aside and the Senate is expected to move on to other matters.

Senate Majority leader Reid withdraws immigration bill
"We bent over backwards" to accommodate Republicans who disliked the bill, Reid said, according to an early report by Politico. "We have to figure out a way to get this bill passed."

"People worked very, very hard on this bill," Reid added.

According to the Associated Press, "Reid said he believed the bill would eventually pass and that he would keep working toward a 'grand bargain' between liberals and conservatives on immigration.

1. Another cloture vote just went down (only 45 supported cloture).
I think we can safely say this sucker's a dead letter at this point.

5. Great news! The fight against this legislation has only begun.
This nation will not be sold out to corporate criminals and a low wage replacement workforce; this legislation is a trojan horse conjured up by sellout corporatist legislators and wall street powered corporations. I'm very disappointed in the sellout Democrats, specially the leadership, harry. I would expect this from many of the corporate owned and operated rethugs.
