and no appreciable reason to expect I'd score with such a preference. Asked to self-classify myself in this manner, I'd have figured I'd score with an "even" rating. As I type about 120 wpm, I wonder if that has bearing on the result -- not a racial preference but a measure of typing speed and stimuli response.

As for the questions... well, there were no questions per se. I did find it amusing that the speed with which I press the E and I keys could somehow reflect my deepest feelings about race.

This seems really silly, from a scientific point of view :P. Basically, you get rocking on GoodOrEuropeanAmerican going left, BadOrAfricanAmerican going right, then they switch it, so maybe twice you fudge it (if you take it seriously and try to go extremely fast, as I did).

It seems like a damn setup doesn't it? It's extremely easy to correlate good with left, bad with right, but race-wise it takes a moment to remember which they assigned, so that once they switch it, it really mucks you up.

I'd like to see if the results would be different, if they correlated European Americans with bad first, or switched races for shapes. Maybe then I would be "very slightly" bigoted against octagons... hehe.

edit: maybe the idea is just that? Getting strong preference for either might mean you have a real problem and don't know it, or do know it, but are trying to compensate, lol. That seems more plausible...

I've taken those tests before.

I was surprised that I only had a slight preference for non-profits over corporations. I was expecting to blow that one out of the water.

I never scored more than a slight preference on any of the ones I took.

But then I have spent almost my whole life on the lookout for prejudice, within myself as well as others and general society. I like to think that I've got it mostly under control, although I do still struggle with hating the haters.

I took it twice. First the thing told me I have moderate preference for Europeans. Second time I had no preference, just cause I got better at it.
Mostly I was concentrating on what goes where, so what does that have to do with preference?

You skew the results by taking it a second time. The underlying theory is that the mind is performing something unconsciously. The more you concentrate on it, the less effective it is at tapping those implicit reactions. The first run through is therefore more accurate, since you are unable to plan effectively and must default to habit. That said, the test likely says more in the aggregate than it says about the individual.

All good sociological/psychological studies of racism have had to deal with the methodological problem: few people admit to racism. One of the first empirical studies designed to overcome this problem was devised, strangely enough, by Theodor Adorno (hardly a guy known for his support of empirical methods in sociology!) in the 1940's. Called the F-Scale, Adorno's testing led to the fabulous study "The Authoritarian Personality." Really interesting stuff. This test is in that tradition.
