Report challenges US claims of Iranian sponsorship of Iraq insurgency

<snip>The most “critical piece of evidence was the EFP ,” Halpin states, a roadside bomb device which officials stated was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of coalition forces. The sophisticated process needed to manufacture EFP’s had been traced to Iran, journalists were told, “and such a capability has not yet been found in Iraq.”

“The official said that, based on general intelligence assessments, it was believed such activities are linked to the highest levels of the Iranian government.”

This claim was contradicted the following day by Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said he had no evidence that Iran’s government was directing the supply of weapons to “Shia insurgent groups in Iraq.”

Moreover, Halpin notes that equipment involved in the production of EPF’s was discovered in a raid by US troops in Baghdad in 2005 and that “EFPs are not exclusive to Iran, but are in fact relatively common around the world.”

10. Is he the Gen. James Mattoon Scott or the Col. Martin Casey character
The way things have been going, I'm going to lean Casey, in that he somehow pulled an Adm. Fallon. Especially considering that up to now he appeared to be a particularly gifted yes man.

22. two reasons possibly
Thast it is impossible to find an army guy to consistently betray the forces on the ground in Iraq with any degree of credibility. That it is firming up the ascendancy of the navy in dealing with Iran.

Both possibilities point disturbingly to the softness of the Bush I leaners in reining in Junior. If they are being protective or ambivalent about Iraq(they all want to keep it and the oil) this weakens their intent to stop or slow actions against Iran. Cheney is not ambivalent. So if people go because they rock the boat towards reality instead of curbing, removing the Cheney nuts this is not a good sign unless the Navy guy is the type to go the Bush I way and know better how to rein in Cheney's naval commanders in the Gulf.

THAT would be a good sign but with Pace's recent statement the timing is right for the bad explanation.
Check out the new man's record, political appointments and military. Probably won't be anymore reassuring than Gates.

23. You May Be Right
Don't know this site but found the remarks interesting

ADMIRAL MIKE MULLEN, TAKES OVER
TOUGH-TALKING, NO-NONSENSE TOP BOSS
BOUNCES VERN CLARK "CRONY" - MORE
BRASS MAY BE "ON THE WAY OUT" - WILL
RELIEVED-OF-COMMAND CAPT. RUTH COOPER
GET THE AXE NOW THAT PROTECTOR CLARK IS GONE? MULLEN OFF TO GREAT START!
MORALE MUCH IMPROVED
HAS POTENTIAL TO BE ONE OF BEST CNO'S EVER

“It took the new Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Mullen, less than 24 hours to dump one of the most disliked officers among the Navy's top brass. Vice-Admiral Joe Sestak, an arrogant and obnoxious "bully-boy," who delighted in being rude and unreasonable and getting away with it, found he was expendable the minute his mentor went out the door.

Rumsfeld "yes-man" and weaselly politician Vern Clark will not be missed by many Navy personnel. In fact, hopeful messages are flooding the office of MilitaryCorruption.com that "maybe, somehow," the Navy has finally gotten a CNO who will "put sailors first" and correct the many mistakes of his predecessor.

It was Clark, a leftover from the Clinton Administration, who promoted Sestak to his third-star and made him deputy chief of naval operations for Warfare Requirements and Programs. Those who dared to complain about Sestak's abusive "management style" were ignored or punished.

By sacking a previously untouchable top-ranking admiral, Mullen has fired a shot across the bow to others like Sestak that their days are numbered too.

All this can only improve morale” cont…

19. "Should people in the U.S. military disobey orders that they believe are illegal?"
http://npc.press.org/index.cfm?theday=17&&themonth=2&&theyear=2006

At the luncheon of the National Press Club on Feb. 17, 2006, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, was asked by his interviewer, John Donnelly: "Should people in the U.S. military disobey orders that they believe are illegal?" Pace's response:

"It is the absolute responsibility of everybody in uniform to disobey an order that is either illegal or immoral."

Thank you, Gen. Pace. Donnelly didn't follow up on his question, so I will, trusting that your answers to my questions will represent your core beliefs, stated on earlier occasions. Gen. Pace, how does your Feb. 17 statement apply to a situation in which troops are ordered to use certain weapons?

Pace: "They will be held accountable for the decisions they make. So they should in fact not obey the illegal and immoral orders to use weapons of mass destruction."

Now what about the commanders that receive orders from their superiors?

Pace: "I believe that a lot of the commanders, in fact, do recognize that they do have a free choice in this, that they should not execute orders that are illegal and immoral, such as any order to use any kind of a weapon of mass destruction."

But aren't commanders supposed to follow orders from their superiors, including the president and the secretary of defense?

Pace: "They can still not commit crimes against humanity. They can still not execute any kinds of orders that might tell them to use weapons of mass destruction."

And will these choices affect their future?

Pace: "hey still have very clear choices to make, and their choices will have major impact, both on the troops who look to them for leadership right now and on their own personal fate when this is all over."

And Gen. Pace, do you trust U.S. servicemen and women to do the right thing?

Pace: "I think that there are Iraqi soldiers out there who know what is right and who will in fact disobey illegal and immoral orders."

Gates was going to re-nominate Pace for another 2 years but consultation with Congress led him to believe that the confirmation would be contentious and he decided to replace Pace. Is this a warning to Petraeus?
