15% in Gallop Poll said they'd be MORE LIKELY to vote for candidates who DIDN'T believe in evolution
And it gets worse...

http://scienceblogs.com/strangerfruit/2007/06/66_of_americans_may_be_young_e.php

66% of Americans may be Young Earthers ...

Category: Anti-evolution • Politics
Posted on: June 7, 2007 9:14 PM, by John Lynch

... or at least can't think critically about polling questions. Today USA Today/Gallup announced poll results on evolution. The "highlights":

  • "Evolution, that is, the idea that human beings developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life" is probably or definitely false: 44%

  • "Creationism, that is, the idea that God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years" is probably or definitely true: 66%

  • 15% said that they would be more likely to vote for a candidate that did not believe in evolution.

The second question is usually taken as an indicator for acceptance of Young Earth Creationism. I’m going to lie down now. Wake me when the hurting stops.

13. And that scares the everlovin' crap out of me.
I have two kids and probably won't have any more... but sometimes, I wonder if I shouldn't have at least a couple more to contribute some sane people to the future.

7. This is sad AND scary. 15% of voters are complete ignorant morons who hate science
If we can't keep religion and state separate, America will be screwed.

These flat-earthers will do anything to fight science and technology.

8. Why would this affect your vote?
I mean, jeez, do people think that someone who believes in evolution is going to make all citizens of the US sign a blood oath that they, too, believe in evolution?

9. I believe the numbers on this.
Even on DU, there is an astonishing amount of ignorance on even the most basic, fundamental ideas of evolution and science in general.

Science is very dirty word these days in the political arena--most people read it as as "atheism".

17. numbers don't add up on the first two...
44% think evolution (particularly human evolution) is probably or definitely false
66% think "young earth" creation (necessarily in direct contradiction to evolution) is probably or definitely true

Ergo at least 10% of the respondents were not carefully considering the questions as asked.

It's possible many respondents missed the part about the time frame in the second question, as a god-guided evolution process is a very popular viewpoint.
