I was making an apparently overly dry comment on Hilton and the media circus around her.

I almost expect to hear that this is some publicity stunt on her part for a remake she's doing of Pvt. Benjamin. Or that all this is going to lead to her doing such a remake to capitalize off of it.

That habit's never going to change, whether it's OJ in a bronco or Paris throwing a fit in court.

They'll get back to the news when they tire of their toy.

I don't like it, but I also don't think for a second that 1. they'd handle it any other way, or 2. they'll stop handling it that way, ever.

Lame attempt at diversion, btw.

You said blondes are "rich, spoiled, entitled, etc." That's a direct quote.

I'm pointing out that 1. you're full of shit, and 2. that's absolutely unacceptable to make broad statements like that. My being born with a particular hair color has zero connection to the kind of person I am, and where the FUCK do you get off making such comments?

Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 06:57 PM by The Backlash Cometh
like that, um, blonde commentator did to Rosie on that View show. Let's follow the line of discussion:

It started thusly: "She's blonde. She'll probably be recruited by
whoever empowers Ann Coulter."

Notice that that falls in line with what I explain later, that it appears that blondes are preferred by the same kind of people who like Ann Coulter because conservative news channel seem to hire a lot of them.

My comment about her being "rich, spoiled, entitled" also applies to Ann Coulter look-alikes. I only brought it up because I thought "the blonde news lady on a conservative channel," is by now, a cliche and I wasn't sure what it was you all were upset about. Now I know.

I'm not letting go of this one because I do believe there is shameless discrimination going on in favor of blonde women in the newschannels, especially conservative ones, and if you don't like it, I'm sorry, but I can't ignore it, and will continue to speak up and point it out whenever the opportunity arises because it's wrong.

141. I'd buy that if you hadn't thrown in the smartass "I didn't want to be redundant" line.
That you later extrapolated your original post out to try and cover your ass still doesn't cover your ass.

You may be all worked up about what you see as "shameless discrimination going on in favor of blonde women," but this blonde woman has fucking had it with blonde jokes, nasty sexual comments, presumptions that I'm stupid or spoiled or fill-in-the-blank because of my hair color.

It is beyond fucked up, and it needs to stop, especially on this allegedly progressive site.

I'm not letting this one go, either.

142. The hardest thing you'll ever do on this newsgroup, is try to be an
honest broker when it's your race or your hair color which is the topic of discussion. I'm hispanic and I think I've bent over backwards trying to control knee-jerk reactions every time that hispanics are the subject of conversation. Maybe I've even erred on the other side. You know, if hispanics and blacks have to do these balancing acts in order to allow the discussion to go further, maybe you can too?

As for the redundant part, I was speaking about Ann Coulter in my original post and referring to the people who would empower HER. That should have been your starting point. And, yes, it is a bit redundant in Paris Hilton's and Ann Coulter's case because they're all those things.

Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 02:40 PM by Gman
as I would for one of my kids, and I've got kids her age, younger and one older. But if it was one of my kids, I'd support what the judge is doing. This really could save her life in the future and that's not some hoakey kind of saying. It's a tough love kind of thing.

It's officially time for Ms. Hilton to grow up.

48. I think that is one of the reasons that I, personally, am thrilled they're throwing the book at her
I have a 21 year old sister who is currently out of control and in some Paris Hilton-esque legal trouble herself. She seems to think that it's "not a big deal", because of all of these celebrities (Paris, Lindsey Lohan, Nicole Ritchie, etc) getting busted for the same types of things and not much happening to them. It's not only viewed as "no big deal" by many in that age group these days, but as something of a rite of passage... badge of honor, maybe. It's sickening. It's not "cool", it's not "normal", and they should be punished harshly.

Yikes... that was all "you damn kids get off my lawn", wasn't it? I'm only 34 *sob*

My brother started working at age 9, delivering papers, and I helped him (dad deserted us, we needed to help mom out). I also remember finding and recycling soda bottles for my spending money. When I was 18, I was in university on scholarship and working part time. By the time I was 26, I had two university degrees, had bought a house, and had a car paid for. No drinking or partying--my idea of a great time was going to an historical site or a library (come to think of it, I still like doing those things!)

I never gave much thought to Martha Stewart, but my respect for her grew tremendously at how she handled herself with the prison sentence. Lots of genuine grace. She handles teasing with grace too. Ever see that Amy Sedaris bit on Conan O'Brian where she shows Martha Stewart how to make a grilled cheese sandwich with an iron, prison style?

I don't doubt it for a minute. She needed her shrink because her sense of entitlement was offended - her "shaking and quivering" in court was the result of her anger that the Judge wasn't dumbstruck by her fame and beauty.
I doubt another 40 days will alter anything. What with the enabling parents and assorted toadies, it's more likely she'll embrace victimhood as her lifetime 'hobby'. Insufferable Twit.

59. All of DU celebrates the symbolic punishment! Off to the sexual torture chamber!
Body cavity searches all around!

This site is turning into a sadistic nest of vipers. And most of the assholes yelling about class privilege here are too lazy or too stupid to undertake a real class analysis, or engage in any real action in a class struggle (hell, class struggle is a dirty thought on this "progressive site"), so they settle instead for the foolish and easy "class warfare" provided by the capitalist class itself, the symbolic punishment of the simulacra, nothing but a symbol.

That the celebrations would turn to bizarre sexualized punishment in the form of the body cavity search is no surprise. Half the good people of this board, progressives all, will go out of their way to advocate RAPE itself as a legitimate punishment for all manner of offenders (apparently, even with rape there is no moral absolute). So, in the Paris Hilton story we see two key features of depraved American existence in the early twenty-first century: sublimated political struggle taking the form of the scapegoat, and an utterly sexualized notion of justice.

You don't need to read twenty books on Iraq to figure out how Abu Ghraib happened.

Just read this thread, and the others like it.

The prison rape jokes are rampant, and many note with glee what will happen to various offenders. 76. Amen! I find the bloodlust over this woman to be absolutely sickening.
Why the fuck are people so gleeful over this? Because she is a rich dimwit? Does that make it feel good to some people? Some mob mentality need to see her taken down?

Drunk driving is a legitimate charge, worthy of harsh punishment. So why isn't everyone reveling in every other person today who is going to jail over that? Why is it so much more satisfying imagining the punishment of this woman? Wallowing in the thoughts of her degradation?

Aside from her very real crimes, it is not a crime to be a rich dimwit, just like it's not a crime to be a poor dimwit, or a crazy dimwit or an antisocial dimwit, etc., etc.

It grosses me out to watch how much fun everyone is having over this one woman's experience - because of factors that are independent of her actual infractions. It reminds me of the same shit with Martha Stewart and it really disturbs me to see this kind of public bloodlust over a woman. I don't remember ever seeing this kind of reaction over a guy, and I'm not usually one to comment on those kinds of inequities, but this really bugs me.

I find the postings on DU today to be really shocking, and I'm not easily shocked.

118. Her sentence was dictated by the LAW, and what the sentence is for the crimes she committed
For all crimes, some serve the minimum and some the maximum. The judge takes into consideration the individual circumstances.

I'd wager a guess she got nailed because this was a pattern of behavior. DUI's, driving on a suspended license (more than once), breaking probation (more than once), not completing her court-ordered alcohol classes, and not showing up for her court date.

Believe what you want, but if you did those things, you'd be in jail right now. There are PLENTY of "average" people serving harsher sentences for less serious crimes right now.

No one in California has ever served 45 days for a similar offense. Same facts, different name, the average person would be sitting at home right now.

But the judge and prosecutor seemed hellbent to go after her.

Very similar to the Martha Stewart case.

I don't think either situation should be applauded as "justice served."

93. We aren't reveling over every other person because...
most would not have gotten a chance to get a get out of jail free card and have a party. Any other person would not have gotten a way with breaking probation. Any other person would not keep committing a crime and then be able to go on tv and laugh about it. Except in extraordinary circumstances and they shouldn't be able to get away with it either.

Why is her degradation any more worse than all of the faces I see on television at night like some who haven't had a chance to comb their hair. Or some who are rustled out of their houses with out the proper clothing on. This woman has the nerve to say she is not coming to court she will do it by phone, every other person can't do that. Every other person can't hold up court proceedings while she applys her make up and gets ready for another party. Every other person would have been tasered, handcuffed, and dragged out of that house and put on display for everyone to see. Paris is not above the law.

83. Is there any confirmation that the bimbo actually threw a party last night?
I had heard there was one planned.
A coming home and a going away party at the same time. How ironic. :woohoo:

How is this news?

It's infotainment. I couldn't give a rat's ass about a coked out celebrity doing a couple hours in jail.

There's a whole class of people like that. Trust fund kids. Elderly toddlers who assume the law doesn't apply to them.

Everyone here who knows me knows you couldn't get much further left than me. Ted killed someone with his drunkenness, left her there to drown and didn't even bother to tell anyone until the next morning. I forget though that it's okay because he's a liberal...woohoohoo....hypocracy makes me puke.
