Gonzales to face ‘no confidence’ vote Monday

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Senate will hold a “no confidence” vote on embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales this Monday, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, announced.

In a statement released Friday, Schumer said if all senators followed their conscience, “this vote would be unanimous.”

“However, the president will certainly exert pressure to support the attorney general, his longtime friend,” Schumer added. “We will soon see where people’s loyalties lie.”

The attorney general is under investigation by Congress over last year’s dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys.

Last month, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, predicted Gonzales would resign before facing a “substantial” no-confidence vote.

Apparently Gonzales has ticked off several of them.

6. Gonzales is not popular in either party
Even over at Free Republic they rip on him all the time. I know several Republicans who hate him. I suspect it will pass easily but Bush seems to be afraid to let him leave.

7. “We will soon see where people’s loyalties lie.” OUCH!
I'm not a big fan of the corporate Democrats--or of big powerful New York Democrats who sit smugly in their Diebold/ES&S-proof state, while the rest of us suffer STOLEN ELECTIONS--but still, I do love it when Democrats speak like the honchos we want them to be, and play the Honest Sheriff drawing a bead on the Bush Cartel gangsters. It does one's heart good. And, even if it is mostly theater, people NEED theater, to reinforce notions of self-respect and empowerment. Anyone who saw those hearings with Gonzales had to feel some pride in our democracy, as this Bush Cartel toady was exposed. We need to be wary of democracy here being merely a fleeting illusion. But we also need to understand how powerful the simple act of accountability can be--no matter how fleeting, or ultimately ineffective it is--because it sends vibrations throughout the populace, and inspires ideas for other, even greater efforts at accountability, at all levels. And I'm not just thinking of impeachment, but also of our idea of ourselves as a sovereign people who have a RIGHT to accountability in our government. We have been so demoralized and disempowered for so long, we are in need of a new template for who we are. And when a politician stands up and helps model that template, it is a generally good thing. (I would make some exceptions--for instance, Christopher Dodd being antiwar. What a crock! He is more responsible than anyone for the Diebold/ES&S "trade secret" proprietary vote counting that plagues us, and that is more than likely responsible for the escalation of the war.)

I wish it was more than "no confidence." I think Alberto Gonzales belongs in jail. But still, this is weighty as to restoration of the "balance of power," which we are so in need of, if we expect to get anywhere in restoring democracy and sanity in our government. The Bush Junta's assault on Congress as an institution, and as an equal branch of government, has been severe. It's good to see Congress fighting back--no matter how long the road may be to true representation of the American people in any aspect of our government.

12. I doubt he will resign no matter how the vote turns out
This administration is just so incredibly arrogant, if Gonzalez hasn't left already I doubt this will make him change his mind. Let's just hope that Congress has a spine and will go for an impeachment vote if he doesn't listen to the no confidence vote.

they have pulled so much crap they need Gonzales to keep a lot of things covered up. I agree, I don't think he will step down either.

14. What, exactly, will a no confidence vote do to him?
Does he have to step down at that time? Does it strip him of any powers? I've never understood what a no confidence vote does in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for your answers to my questions

16. It doesn't have any binding impact
Most people who received a no confidence vote would resign however, as it is quite a huge stain on your record. In this case though, I doubt Gonzalez will resign. This administration is just too arrogant I don't think any of them care what anyone else thinks.

already. No matter what the Senate might vote this is surely a necessary step.

19. Yes, and cemented election reforms.
Makes one wonder if there are really two different parties, or what?
Afterall, it was 2 Democratic presidents who were cheated out of their wins by crooked Republican %$@&*!
Ya think they'd make damn sure THAT never happened again, right out of the gate.
