I will use the Paris defense next time I stay at one of their places - 'hey, I shouldn't have to do something like pay the bill waaaaaaaa!'

I am sure the manager would be moved and just let me stay there for free anytime I wanted. I am sure Paris would want her guests treated as she wants to be treated...

Given the numbers of people killed by drunk drivers, 45 days in jail seems very fair to me for ignoring the law and thinking she is above it.

10. To be serious about this for a moment... There should be alternatives to jail

for almost all DUI drivers (except those who have caused bodily injury). If it were up to me... i would take away drivers licenses and give them bus passes and bicycles. If they violate the order, confiscate cars and extend the license loss for years.
I would rather see someone who did what Paris did (violate probation on a DUI) get a 5 year license loss rather than a relatively short-stint in jail... she will probably get her license back too soon in my view.

In that way, the punishment fits the crime. This way we taxpayers aren't paying for expensive jails... the offender gets to work... but stay out of vehicles. Yes, there is the chance they will blow it... but who is to say that someone who does a jail stint is not going to blow it afterward anyway? no guarantees either way.
I don't think most people belong in jail, rich or poor... we should think of alternatives. The poor suffer the most... if they go to jail they lose their jobs.

i know the hurt DUI drivers cause. I remember losing a young activist friend to a DUI accident years ago. She was engaged to be married. I won't forget her crying boyfriend at the memorial service.

And everybody on this board knows that there are. Nobody goes to jail on a first time DUI, or even a first time driving on a suspended license. For the exact reasons you mentioned.

people from repeating. Drunk driving, with or without their revoked or not revoked license, must be near or at the top of repeat offenses. And it seems every time there's a fatality we learn that the guy had a list of priors as long as an August afternoon.

There must be a better way than either jail or just hoping they won't do it again.
