A visit from the "CEO".
Yes, we all heard the news that the CEO of our parent company was coming to visit our 50ish employee company.

Of course it was a mad scramble to get ready. We put up new mission statements. We all spent a lot of time cleaning. One team made some personalized banners to put up, welcoming him. We were all told to dress up. Boy some people were nervous. Name tags were designed and printed, and several days were spent preparing literature to present him.

The CEO pulled up in a long black stretch limo (paid for by us). He walked in the front door to the conference room, where he met with a small group of department leaders for 4 hours. He then walked straight back to the limo, taking him back to his $500 a day suite, we paid for that too.

None of the rest of us even saw what he looked like hardly.

My question is, is this normal? I found it somewhat troubling. I'm suprised he didn't take the time to at least tour the building.

We're a small company, but part of a large corporation.

1. Any farmer will tell you...
..you don't get attached to animals who are destined to become dinner.

Rightsizing in the offing, is my guess.

2. Welcome to the new Feudal system .... peasant
I witnessed something similar when a VP showed up at the particular branch of the multinational Corp I used to work at. I swear it was like royalty visiting. Everyone scrambled and he passed amongst the peasants and gave out boons and acknowledgements.

Its not a fascist state we live in. They have managed to reinvent the feudal system again and we are all the peasants. Just take a look at Paris Hilton for an example of what our royalty looks like. She is the crowned princess of a mighty empire. And she looks down on us peasants with disdain.

3. CEOs vary.
At the company that Mr. Tesha and I grew up in, the
founder was a very personable, completely non-pretentious
guy. An ex-engineer, he still drove a Ford Pinto wagon
and eventually upgraded all the way to an Escort when
Ford put him on its Board of Directors. At the time,
this guy's company probably employed 150K or so people.
Mr. Tesha worked directly with this CEO several times.

Later, the founder was superseded by a fellow everyone
knew as "GQ Bob"; your CEO sounds just like this second
guy. The company was demolished shortly afterwards,
thanks in large part to GQ Bob's efforts.

Nowadays, I work for myself, but Mr. Tesha once again
works for a company with a mere mortal CEO. The CEO
sits in a cube completely identical to Mr. T's and
probably knows most of the thousand or so headquarters
employees by name. Every half year or so, the company
holds some sort of "all hands" fun day (for example, a
picnic in the summer, a holiday party near Christmas)
and a main point of entertainment is always the
opportunity for everyone to have some sort of good-
natured fun at the expense of senior management
(silly minibike races, fastball radar gun competitions,
ginger-bread house decorating races, disco dancing
competitions, and the like) and this CEO is always
a very happy participant in all the silliness as is
his staff.

CEOs really set the tone for the company, for good
or for bad.

Tesha

5. Mr Tesha's CEO is a special leader more interested in
his people than himself. I do not even have to ask if the company is successful. The CEO's authentic leadership means that it is.

I am very interested in the name of Mr. Tesha's company, as I am participating in a year-long leadership seminar. Could I ask that you PM to me the name of the company? Thanks.
