EDIT: ( I watched the Book Fair segment, that is.)

I have a house administrator and teacher here this weekend, and want to discuss it with her.

It seems like the author has found a way to use popular culture as a bridge to inspire thinking, reading books and education. I think our next president, Al Gore would approve.

Did she say one out of ten people reads today?

9. After Words: Kenneth Ackerman interviewed by Joan Biskupic

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Words: Kenneth Ackerman, author of "Young J. Edgar: Hoover, The Red Scare, And The Assault On Civil Liberties" interviewed by Joan Biskupic

Historian Kenneth Ackerman examines the early career of J. Edgar Hoover in "Young J. Edgar: Hoover, The Red Scare, And The Assault On Civil Liberties." Hoover began his career as a twenty four year old assistant to Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer where he played an influential role in the undertaking of the Palmer Raids. The raids resulted in the arrests of over ten thousand Americans suspected of radical political beliefs after bombs exploded in nine U.S. cities on June 2, 1919. The reputation of Attorney General Palmer would later be tarnished due to what was deemed as an overzealous assault on civil liberties. J. Edgar Hoover would escape from the aftermath of the Palmer Raids unscathed and in 1924 became the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a position he held until 1972. Kenneth Ackerman discusses his book with Joan Biskupic, Supreme Court correspondent for USA Today.

Kenneth Ackerman is the author of several books on U.S. history including, "Dark Horse: The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield." He has served in senior posts on Capitol Hill and the executive branch for over twenty five years and currently practices law. Joan Biskupic is the Supreme Court correspondent for USA Today. She is the author of "Sandra Day O'Connor: How the First Woman on the Supreme Court Became It's Most Influential Justice." Prior to joining USA Today, Ms. Biskupic reported on the Supreme Court for the Washington Post. She is currently working on a book about Justice Antonin Scalia.

Marcy Wheeler

In "Anatomy of Deceit" blogger Marcy Wheeler condemns the Bush administration, saying the Vice President's office deliberately "outed" CIA agent Valerie Plame, wife of former ambassador Joe Wilson. Further, she criticizes the mainstream media for their complicity in promoting the administration's rationale for war in Iraq -- that Iraq was on the verge of acquiring weapons of mass destruction. 52. "Land of Lincoln"--Not Sure About This Book
I'm not sure if this book is worth reading or not, since I can't get enough of a sense of it beyond the rather annoying author. The premise is fabulous and very interesting (based on this program today and a recent C-SPAN interview with Brian Lamb): it investigates and analyzes the world of Lincoln itself, beyond biography--the places where Lincoln lived and still lives as a presence, the people who love (and hate) Lincoln, Lincoln forums, historical societies, books, etc. The Lamb interview a month ago or whatever it was, had parts of the discussion on Lincoln collections that people own, on what Springfield is like and how it commemorates the memory of Lincoln, fights between different historical groups as to how to present Lincoln, a new museum that is part "theme park" and part museum, how much people actually know about Lincoln and why Lincoln is still revered, etc., all very interesting to me, and this program today seemed it was going to continue that line. It began with talk about the origin of the Lincoln Trail, etc., and how it was actually invented by the Petroleum Institute to get people to drive and use gas, etc., but there the whole thing fell apart for me. I don't know if this person was the right author for this book.

This Andrew Ferguson is a writer for the archcon Republican "Weekly Standard" and was introduced during the Brian Lamb program as a friend of that archcon prick P.J. O'Rourke, (a "comedian"), which would seem to be the worst type to do this project. The author was corporate, a male bigot, and totally glib and "wryly amusing" or whatever the attempt was, the entire time, killing every topic discussed. I got nothing out of it, and the audience even seemed to be drifting as it went on. Books of this type, about areas of the country and the people who keep a culture alive, and why, can be profound and wake the whole meaning of a thing up for you as an appreciation of living history. This was what I hoped for; I don't know if that was what it was--the author speaking was disappointing and annoying. Maybe the book has a different attitude to it. Regardless, still a wonderful and important topic.

30. I've spent all day wrestling with PG&E. Our hot water heater
went off and they won't come UNTIL MONDAY to look at it. Eight families + no hot water + four days = ACK!

It's like living in the old Soviet Union! Forgive my misplace homicidal tendencies. LOL

home -- green, off the grid altogether.

I'm ready. Gimme a rubber band and a philodendron and I'm good.

Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know -- And Doesn't
Stephen Prothero
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0507/btv051207_4b.ram

Religion professor Stephen Prothero writes in "Religious Literacy" that while the United States is a deeply religious nation, few Americans understand the basics of Christianity and other major world religions. Prothero advocates teaching religion in public schools, which he says will help Americans address domestic and foreign challenges facing the country.

Stephen Prothero chairs the religion department at the University of Boston. He studies the history of religion in the United States.

Foundations of Betrayal: How the Liberal Super-Rich Undermine America
Phil Kent

Phil Kent talks about the influence of liberal foundations in changing the culture of America. Mr. Kent argues that while many of these foundations started off with admirable goals, some of the biggest have since been hijacked by anti-capitalist, anti-American radicals who use these foundations to further their own political agendas.

Phil Kent is a former editorial writer, editorial page editor, and political columnist for The Augusta Chronicle and in the early 1980s served as press secretary to Sen. Strom Thurmond. Mr. Kent is the author of "The Dark Side of Liberalism: Unchaining the Truth."

45. Wha???
There are all the Think Tanks from the Rabid Right which push fundie theology; neocon preemptive wars; rule of the haves and the have mores; and global corporation dominance.

From this lecture premise, all these right wing think tanks are the established moral ground of the US. Any deviation from this hard right greed based premise is a betrayal? A dark side?

This lecture will not be a one to be tivo'd.

46. The Nancy Isenberg Book on Aaron Burr was very interesting...thanks for the Heads Up!
Nancy Isenberg, Fallen Founder: The Life Of Aaron Burr
Aaron Burr is best known for his rivalry with Alexander Hamilton and the duel between the two men that left Hamilton mortally wounded. Nancy Isenberg examines the life of Aaron Burr and contends that the third vice president of the United States deserves to be included within the pantheon of the founding fathers. The author argues that Burr has been miscast as a traitor due to the writings of political rivals from the 18th century. Ms. Isenberg presents her book at the Chappaqua Public Library in Chappaqua, New York. (Saturday 7:00 PM ET)
