I coughed up my adams apple! Comparing Paris to Princess Di is like comparing Courney Love to Mother Theresa.

116. Agree. Olbermann had Shapiro last night
and I thought that Shapiro provided interesting point of view.

First of all, that such felony charges never merit this punishment. That she did receive a severe jail time because of her being who she is.

Second, that it is up to the Sheriff to run the jail, to determine who stays and who goes free, especially with LA notorious over crowded jails.

She should have been sent to community service: cleaning the side of the freeways, but doing this someplace in the desert, in secret, so the roads won't be crowded, and the skies not be filled with helicopters.

77. She just needs better lawyers, like Tracy Morgan's....
Tracy Morgan was convicted twice for DWI within 11 months with blood alcohol levels much higher than Hilton:

"Tracy Morgan pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge.

Morgan submitted the plea in Manhattan Criminal Court in exchange for a conditional discharge.

Judge Ellen Coin ordered Morgan to enter a doctor-supervised alcohol program, do community service to be determined later, and avoid being arrested again within the next six months. The judge also fined Morgan $1,000 and suspended his driver's license for six months.

Morgan was stopped about 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 28, 2006. Police said he smelled of alcohol and later failed a Breathalyzer test.

On Dec. 2, 2005, Morgan was arrested in Hollywood on impaired driving charges after police stopped him for speeding. Authorities there said his blood-alcohol level was 0.13 percent, over the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He leaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, fined $390 and ordered to attend an alcohol education program."

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=287522...

No jail. Hilton should hire Morgan's lawyer.

She's a rich young woman who's a bubblehead. She broke the law and ought to do her time. Fine by me.

But ...

Instead, she gets a special sentence, handwritten by the judge on a stock legal form; a media feeding frenzy; and an outpouring of spleen and bile.

And that's cool?

12. Look
Getting a 45 day sentance in LA for driving with a suspended license (TWICE) is not a special sentence, it is common.

What is uncommon is this spoiled bitch thinks she doesn't have to serve her time like the little people do, she is above the law because she has money. And she is Paris Hilton, Heiress.

That is why she has bile directed at her.

She is the female Bush when he was a frat boy.

Maybe one day she will be President, too.

65. "Pain Is Good"
And life is so rigorous that we all need it. In kindergarten. In adulthood.

Well, not ME. And maybe not YOU. But certainly everyone else.

Right?

I never thought I'd see that espoused as a serious philosophy at DU. Defending the errant Ms. Hilton isn't even a blip on the screen compared to this zeitgeist.

Yes, yes, the judge was acting out of the highest concern for human life. Like a loving parent who must administer corporal punishment to make their child a better person. Good god, it's such necessary work that many parents even have to get roaring drunk first. And the worse the pain, the better! Even God approves of it. But at least they won't become worthless whores like Paris. No, they can grow up to become corporate executives or even the President!

I guess that soon we will hear that rogue cops beat the shit out of poor people (in whose name we hate Paris) to make them better people ... or that we're in Iraq to improve the place, maybe whip a little democracy on them.

Pain Is Good -- but only when giving it, and not receiving it.

It's the American Way!

i am neither for or against her, she did the crime, she showed up for court late which probably didn't help her case much, her mom went off on the justice system and said her daughter was being persecuted so i'm all done. 16. I wouldn't call myself a supporter but I think once they let her out she should have stayed out
They are kind of fucking around with her emotions. Happiness is based on expectations. For example if you tell a little kid that they are going to get a big, sweet, yummy ice-cream cone and get them all excited and anticipating it, then you go as far as putting it in his hand. THEN, just as little Jimmy is about to take his first lick, you yank the ice-cream cone away from him and say "FUCK YOU LITTLE JIMMY!" :spank:

Now, what do you think little Jimmy is going to do? Little Jimmy is going to go NUTS!!!

Personally, I think the sheriff should have stayed out of this but once he stuck his big nose in and let her out then she probably should have been left out. She deserves jail time but not to be a fucking ping pong ball between two groups flexing their muscle. They need to make up their minds as to where she is going to be and leave her there.

Then again, I think she will survive and she does have a very cushy life and will one day be a multi millionaire so she really should pull it together and grow up.

I would trade her places right now if I knew I was going to be loaded one day. BRING ON THE JAIL TIME!!!:woohoo:

in that jail, so it is SOP to give inmates who can afford home monitoring, which they cover the cost of, that option if they are non-violent offenders. She fit that profile, and the sheriff acted on it as he has done in many, many similar cases, without regard to the inmate's celebrity status.

What was unusual was the judge going back and overruling him - once in the sheriff's custody, it is out of the judge's hands. It was the judge who overreached himself.

The idea that the sheriff was giving Paris "special treatment" is ridiculous. Prisoners are released before the end of their sentence every day. They just aren't rich and famous enough to get the judge and prosecutor up in arms about it.

And no, I'm not a "Paris fan." But the behavior of many DUers today was sickening.

48. The judge denied her house arrest and ORDERED her incarcerated.
Obviously he didn't trust her being on house arrest. Didn't a big party supplies truck pull up today while the news cameras were there? Didn't she say she was supposed to have a party tonight? Just how sick was she?

She shouldn't be treated any differently than anyone else. In some most states, if you violate your probation, they lock you up for the remaining time of your probationary period, NOT just the time you got for the crime that violated you. In other words, if you have 2.5 years of probation left, you go to jail for 2.5 years. They gave you a chance... YOU blew it.... it's time to pay the piper.

51. Maybe you need to go down to the L.A. County Jail and ask how many
african americans and/or hispanics are serving out the rest of the probation in jail because they violated probation.

I'm not condoning nor condemning her personally. I'm stating a fact.

FACT:

  • She got arrested for some reason that put her on probation in the first place.

  • She was arrested twice while on probation.

  • People who violate probation normally get locked up for the remainder of their probation.

Why are some DUer's being so wilfully ignorant of the Rule of Law in this country, when it's what we've been screaming for for the past 5 or 6 years? I don't understand it either...

Jesus Christ on a crotch rocket. Can't anyone read anymore? This is just as pitiful as when someone posts a thread saying "AL Gore said HE IS NOT RUNNING"... and 90 people post oh, he's running.. he's just being coy!

Take baby-steps. Start with the small words.

The
Judge
DENIED
her
request
for
house
arrest.

She had already proven a willingness to NOT FOLLOW ORDERS OF PROBATION. WTF makes anyone think she's gonna obey house arrest restrictions?

76. Got facts?
You call other DUers "ignorant of the facts in this case", yet you provide no facts to back up your assertion that Paris got a longer than usual sentence. So please, point us to your source for this information. Remember, when comparing sentences, we would want to compare against others that include all of Paris' infractions, from the original DUI, to the not living up to terms of her probation, to being cited not once, but twice for driving without a license during her probationary period, to her mouthing off in court... I'm sure the rest of us peons would never get jail time for any of that, right?

Believe it or not, I do have some empathy for her. Solitary confinement, even if meant for her own protection, is hard to deal with. I would certainly find it hard to be in a room for 23 hours a day, with no TV or other distractions. But if it forces her to deal with herself, and learn the art of self discipline, this could do her a world of good in the long run. Easy to say, of course, when it is someone else who gets to have their growth experience in the slammer!

So here's my wish for you, Paris: you are obviously either "spirited" or "out of control", take your pick: (a) If it is "spirited", then please find a way to channel that energy in more positive ways. You could, for example, join the quest to bring the poorest of Africa's people up from desperate poverty (just one example). (b) If it is "out of control", then recognize that you lack discipline in your life, and that you will have to learn to provide it for yourself, since your family clearly did not give you that important underpinning. The good news is, you can provide it for yourself. A good goal for initial practice with self discipline, would be to actually live up to any remaining legal obligations from this bout with the law, and then to (gasp) actually avoid further bouts with the law by (double gasp) the simple step of not actually breaking any laws. Give it a try, the world ain't that bad a place, especially for someone like you with money and good looks. There is so much you could do, Paris; please, do yourself a favor and find "the good Paris" before "the bad Paris" takes over forever.

81. Not EXACTLY. In this case, the judge ordered that she not be released to home monitoring
before she was in the custody of the Sheriff. Because of that, the Sheriff did not have the customary authority to put her on home monitoring.

I'm not saying the judge should have done that -- to the contrary, it seems he went overboard in doing so.

45. Considering she was planning a big party for tonight, I think her emotions are just fine.
I do NOT think she's on the verge of some kind of breakdown; I do think she's outraged to the point of tantrum-throwing that she's being forced to suffer the consequences of her actions.

A fucking party. She was going to have a big, boozy blowout to celebrate her "upgrade" to house arrest. Makes it kind of hard to feel much sympathy for her.

46. What I find shocking is the level of vitriol some DU posters ...
are willing to level at Paris Hilton. Where the heck is this coming from?

Sure, she's a spoiled brat, she's selfish, she's self-important -- whatever, I'll stipulate to all that. But why are some people so angry at her? It's bizarre. Reading the threads tonight, I've seen her all but accused of being responsible for the Iraq war and poverty in America and global warming. That's just ridiculous. She's a rich kid who had a stupid TV show and goes to a lot of party; she's no monster.

Some people actually seem angry at her for crying about being sent back to jail. Why?! What's wrong with that? I'd probably cry if I were being sent to jail -- even if I deserved it.

I haven't ever seen such a huge amount of hate. It's like a Klan rally or something. It is truly stunning.

of attention. She also got a small jail sentence for violating her probation. She got time off for good behavior before she even showed up in the jail.
But the way she is crying, whining and carrying on one would think she got the death penalty. And the way some posters are carrying on in support of her one would also think she got a death penalty. It's not fair for Paris to go to jail because she is "extroverted."

109. Like I Said: Most Overused Word On DU.
Misogyny is having hatred of women. Misogyny is NOT having hatred for ONE woman.

The terms you describe above are words used to criticize someone generally of the female gender. Using them does not make one a misogynist.

And your analogy was fundamentally flawed. Calling someone a honky or cracker is disparaging an entire race. It is a putdown based on the overall race, not a description or attack on the person themselves. Calling a woman a bitch is NOT a putdown that criticizes women as a whole, but instead is limited exclusively to the individual being attacked. That is a huge difference.

Now if someone said a statement such as "I gots to get me some bitches" or "screw those women, they's nuttin but stupid ho's", then I can understand your case for misogyny. That's the context it would require in order for it to be misogyny. Just calling a woman a bitch, based on that one woman's individual characteristics and used as a personal adjective, not an overall entire gender description, is not even close to misogyny.

Maybe you thought it was due to a lack of an understanding of what misogyny actually is. I'll repeate for you: Misogyny is hatred towards women, as a group. It is not hatred towards A woman, based on a dislike for the ONE woman.

And I don't mind that you're gone for a week and can't reply. The only correct reply to this would technically be "Oh ok, I see what you mean OMC, you were right. Sorry", but I wouldn't expect you to be able to say that anyway. So enjoy wherever it is you are going. Hope ya have fun!

It's about bigger things, like the dumbing-down of the MSM (which has been going on for years), and the concurrent dumbing-down of our justice system (ditto). Paris is just kind of a scapegoat for the whole thing because she's famous/notorious/rich/whatever. I'm not really pro- or anti-, but I think this situation is going to open a lot of people's eyes up to what's fundamentally wrong with these institutions that the public has come to trust over the years.

119. Can someone link the posts with all the hate that equals a Klan rally?
Because I haven't seen it. Seen a lot of people complaining about it and hating on the people who expressed hate like that, but honestly I haven't seen the original hate. Not saying that it's not there, just that I haven't seen it.

Complaining about the media focusing so much on her and not really wanting to send her a sympathy card does not equal actually wanting to beat her to death or hang her or drag her behind a car.

125. 'She sucks, I love that she is in jail. Thought her crying was funny.'
Look up about two inches. One example.
