My wife just had a Freeper write on our car while she was in it.
She is at a dance recital with my 16 year old daughter and was sitting in the car before my daughter had to go on stage and she noticed this creep in the rear view mirror. I have a "W" sticker with a red circle and a red line through the W sticker and an oval sticker than reads " FW" (the white Euro sticker with the black border"

She gets out of the car and yells "just what the heck are you doing? HIS REPLY IS "I WAS WRITING SOMETHING...IT'S STILL A FREE COUNTRY" She sais clean it off and then the bastard walks away. (It was written through the dirt on the back window of my Volvo.) This mind you is a parent of one of the dancers.

All I can say is I'm glad I wasn't in the car too. I would probably be in jail now for assault.

Now she wants the stickers removed.

What should I do?

23. In view of the ad hominem nature of "pig"....
... and the circumstances surrounding it , I'd look into filing a harassment complaint. This assumes, of course, you are living in a politically neutral jurisdiction.

A 'higher road' response ( and less bureaucratic): write him a letter and ask him to apologize.

Or perhaps speak to him directly.

Then there's always the public embarrassment option: letter to the editor.

Really, the police should do something. It's vandalism, at a minimum.

Pleae don't take the stickers off.

102. Writing in the dirt on a car window with your finger is hardly vandalism.
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 01:13 PM by A HERETIC I AM
It was a stupid, invasive and ignorant thing to do but unless i missed something completely, it didn't hurt the car.

That moron freeper's sentiment will be gone permanently in two seconds with a wet towel.

Sure, confront the guy if you know who it is, write a ltte if it makes you (the OP) feel better but to suggest this somehow vandalized the vehicle is a bit of a stretch.

If you think it's not vandalism, try writing it on a Police Car.

When you get out of jail, you can report back on the improved
state of your education.

106. Whether or not it is a police car has nothing to do with the definition.
Again, writing in the dirt on a car window is hardly vandalism. It might be mischief, but it doesn't devalue the car, it doesn't permanently scar the car and therefore it doesn't rise to the level of vandalism. Writing "Pig" in the paint with a key is entirely different, but that is apparently not what happened.

"If you think it's not vandalism, try writing it on a Police Car.

When you get out of jail, you can report back on the improved
state of your education."

Yes, that is how i test every legal claim or question made on DU. I go test it on a police car. I'll get right on it and report back.:wtf:

As for education, here, try some for yourself;
http://www.answers.com/topic/vandalism

http://definitions.uslegal.com/v/vandalism/

It is stupid, ignorant, mischievous and intrusive but it isn't vandalism.

And like I said, if you're so sure you're correct,
just go run the experiment I proposed. I assure you
you'll find that you will rapidly be accused of
having broken several laws.

123. This conversation is not about scratching paint!
From the original post;
(It was written through the dirt on the back window of my Volvo.)

That is not vandalism.

Had the account been related with the words "Written in the dirt on the rear of my car" the situation would be different.

I spent 12 years of my life polishing and detailing vehicles like this;

I am VERY aware of the damage a finger can do on a dirty paint job.

Instead of me running an experiment for you, why don't you go and try and find a police officer willing to arrest or even ticket someone for writing in the dirt on a cars glass. More than likely, you'll find the cop will tell you to get over yourself, wash it off and stop wasting his time.

134. It might even be considered assault.
Or intimidation, if nothing else. Perhaps something on the order of criminal mischief. I only responded to this thread because the claim was made that it was vandalism. It does not fit that definition. This incident might fit many other definitions but not that one. The poster above who responded to my initial post just doesn't seem to get that.

The thing had those huge 3 foot wide tires, jacked up, chromed out and covered in american flags. And a bumper-sticker that read "Kick their ass and steal their gas". I wish I was making this up. It was one of the more disgusting, stupid, selfish things I'd ever seen.

Now c'mon, tell me you wouldn't be tempted to write 'pig' on the dust on that bumper?

ps - re the 'touch my car' bumbersticker I mistakenly thought I was replying to Ms Thing. I mean Le Tza Hot. Sorry. Your reply was more reasonable than threatening violence.

The dirt under your finger grinds the message into the glass permanently. On paint, it's even worse. You definitely have a case for vandalism. I say, if you didn't back over him, take him to court and get a judgement for a new window.

I know your wife is afraid that the next clown will use a marker or key the side of the car or worse, and it's a legitimate fear. However, which is more damaging, cosmetic damage to a car or losing your FREEDOM?

Put things into proportion! We all risk property damage from this scum every day. We all risk assault from this scum every day. Knuckling under, keeping silent, and giving them the obedience they seek will only give them more and more power.

They can take our right to express ourselves only with our permission. They don't have mine. Do they have yours?

While this guy is a jerk and was being an a-hole.

I wonder about the legal issues. You do own your car but can you claim to own the dust on it? I've wondered about this question of the space around your car since I first encountered the type of car alarm that warns you when you get within a couple of feet. Do we own the space around our car?

On your situation. Leave the mental pigmy alone.

19. There was a guy who didn't like a local woman's liberal bumper stickers and he left a note on
the woman's windshield with some pro-Bush comments and questioning whether the owner of the car thought we should fight terror. He also left his phone number. The woman called the guy and told him to stay away from her car and the guy proceeded to call her a "commie" among other things.

The woman called the police, the guy was cited and fined for harassment, but the charges were overturned by a local magistrate (who happens to be a Democrat).

Unless what the person wrote was threatening, or your car was damaged, there's probably not much you can do.

Or did she surprise him when she stepped out? I'm just curious.

As for what you should do, not much. He didn't have a right to write on your vehicle, that's true. However, if no actual damage was done and it was only written in dust, there's no real harm.

If your wife dives the vehicle and doesn't want to be confronted then you should remove the stickers. I'm a woman and I get crap like this all the time, and always from men, for mine. I've made the decision to deal with it when I put the stickers on my car. If your wife doesn't want to, or can't handle dealing with it, take the stickers off.

I agree with the comments made above that these types want her to take the stickers off. He will be checking her car to see if she's removed the stickers & will derive great satisfaction if they are removed. That said, you don't want your wife driving around feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. Give her a couple of days to reflect on what happened & if she still wants the stickers off, take them off.

BTW, I tape bumper stickers in the back window of my truck. Before the 2004 election I had one that had a photo of Kerry & a photo of Bush. The text read "Patriot" under Kerry's photo & "Patriot Act" under Bush's photo. Someone took the time to wipe a booger on the window over Kerry's photo. :eyes:

Put them on when you go to dance class, but take them off when you don't want your bumper all cluttered. That will show him you won't cave to his "Free Speech" and if he tries to take one of your stickers off, you have a better case for vandalism.

But then again, I would understand if your wife feared for her safety... I just have a hard time backing down to these assholes.

spread over it. My reaction was to add an "M (picture of peach) W" next to it.

On the whole, I prefer bumper stickers that are a little more cryptic because it is harder for Republicans to figure them out. I live in Washington State, so quite a few people have asked me, regarding my "no W" sticker, why I hate Washington. I think the "M (picture of peach) W" will be even harder for them to decipher.

90. Respect your wife's autonomy
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 11:42 AM by lwfern
You're not her dad, it's her car. It's her choice how to deal with it. Whatever mindset you are in that wants to see yourself as the person who knows better how to solve her problems, drop that. If she wants your help, give it, but if she doesn't, what you see as protecting in a good way can be perceived by others as treating her like a child.

It's very frustrating to be in a relationship where the other person always knows better than you how you should handle your own affairs. Spend more time listening, less time solving.

Personally, I probably would have immediately wiped it off, and then regretted not having the presence of mind to keep it, and add "John Doe (except his real name) wrote this on my car because he didn't like my bumper sticker."

Let him own it.

In fact a piece of masking tape across the back window saying that is still an option, even though it's gone now. "John Doe wrote PIG on my car. You might want to keep a camera available if you see him near your car."

But, you know, that's wishful thinking here, not something you should tell her to do. :)

I adjusted the "squirters" on my rear window to squirt out. If someone tries to write something on the rear window, they get a blast of water.

It's also useful for squirting the windshields of tailgaters. They tend to back off when the water hits their window.

Of course you just enrage the Neanderthal by doing this, so have your concealed handgun ready....

101. Remove the stickers. It's not worth the fight with your wife.
Back in the 2002 elections some DUers posted about mounting stickers on the magnetized rubber that they make refrigerator magnets from. You could put the stickers on while driving and take them off while parked. This might be a compromise solution for you and your wife. Take the stickers off while she drives or is in the car and put them on when you use the car.

117. Hate to say this, but what you need to do if you don't want to be harassed
is take the stickers off.

My old car used to get banged up and scratched and keyed all the time. But one day I took all political stickers off. And it never happened after that.

Sad, but true.

118. Gotta love all the recommendations for violence on this thread.
For touching someone's car no less. And people say Democrats are pussies. You guys make me proud.

121. Confront him together ina public place, like another dance thing
say something along the line of "hey asshole, private cars are private property and your right to free speech doesn't apply there. Vandalizing our car because you disagreed with a bumper sticker is a really stupid way to get your point across. Sneaky, nasty and something your mama would not be proud of or righteous piece of shit. I catch you near our car again and I'm filing a report with the police to get your ass hauled off for harassment, trespassing, and any other charge we can think up. Here are enlistment forms for you and your progeny to fill out since you obviously believe supporting the idiot in chief is the right thing to do. F* off asshole".

Maybe a bit more civily, but along that line.

122. Just me but this one I would let go. (My wife won't "let" me put stickers anyway).
What do you actually expect from these kind of people?

124. Tell her it's still a free country. You're still free to have a sticker on your car. And no one
else is free to touch your car without your permission.

125. What can you do?
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 04:20 PM by TheWatcher
These people are beyond reason, beyond logic, beyond help.

If it had been me, my Insurance premiums would be going up, and I would be paying a visit to Empire Auto Glass.

No elaboration needed.

For all those who disagree with the violent sentiments on this thread, all I can do is shrug.

What is there left to do with these people? They can't co-exist. Period.

The best advice I can give people is NEVER be the one to initiate any confrontation.

But if one of these pieces of filth gives you absolutely no choice, then show them Progressive does not necessarily mean Passive.

132. "IT'S STILL A FREE COUNTRY". Uh, yeah- to write on your own shit, numbnuts.
Typical right-wing goon, he was probably piss-in-his-pants scared that he actually got confronted and ran away.

If you know who this person is, I suggest you follow up on it.

she had NO idea why he was approaching and touching the car, yes? Can't be too careful, these days, a woman alone and all that.

I would have told the freeper jerk (is that redundant?) that any part of his body that touches my car is forfeit and will not be returned.

he stuck with a 3 letter word. Bigger ones like "moran" would have been too much for him.
