I didn't buy a raffle ticket for the free burial plot
I went to a Senior Expo this morning. The funeral homes and nursing homes were well represented as well as just about every politician running for any office in the county. Getting old is in the cards for all of us, may as well take a moment or two to plan.

1. My plans are made
I want to be cremated and my ashes scattered upwind of any gathering of republicans.

3. I will be cremated as well but
I don't know whats to be done with the remains. I would like a small urn to be put on display on the second deck of the tropical Isle in New Orleans. There is already one urn encased in the wall, a lawyer. My wife can dump the rest of me in the Mississippi. About five years ago the 17 year old dog who belonged to the owner of my favorite watering spot died. The dog was everybody's favorite, just a loveable little mutt. The owner had the dog cremated and put the urn behind the bar. One of the old regulars really missed the dog and after a few beers he would get behind the bar, get the urn and take the dog for a ride. The owner had to eventually put the urn away just in case it got lost. Lovely story.

4. Cremation. I'd prefer to be composted
but honestly, the landfill will do just as well.

Once I'm done with it, my only concern for this body is that its decomposition doesn't make other folks sick.

5. They won't do what I want
No embalming fluid.

No coffin

Bury me in someone's farm so I can give back to the land what it gave to me.

Either that or put me on a pyre and make soap from the ashes and fat.

7. Green burials

Lots of info on it in the UK, but this is the only US site I could find on a quick Googlage. I've already told my half that this is what I want.

8. Sounds nice
But the American funeral industry would hate it.

9. Thanks for that link!
I knew about the green cemetery in New York but I'm a Westerner, so was happy to find one in California. I don't want to be cremated because I'd rather give it back to the ecological system in the traditional way -- IOW I'd rather feed a tree.

2. The AARP has been sending me reminders
Dear you,

You're getting old. Join us.

love,
Old people

My hope is I will spend my elder days with a jelly jar full of whiskey, sitting on the porch, yelling at the kids to get off my lawn. But you're right. We all need to plan.

6. I've been ignoring AARP correspondence
for years but they continue to send to me. They had a booth set up prominently at the expo. I have discovered there are countless sources of assistance to where I do not need them. I like your idea of sitting on the porch. I think I'll set up an ice cold keg of Bud.

10. I did that when my father died
What a mess! No one knew what to do. In the meantime, there was a dead body to deal with and no one wanted to deal with it! It was after that that I pre-arranged for both myself and my partner. The cost was $1600.00 for both of us to be cremated and have our ashes scattered at sea.

I don't know if this was a good deal or not, but it is a done deal in any event.

I was not very old when I did this either, I just did not want to have this happen when I die - no one willing to take responsibility and no one knowing what the wishes are in the event of my or my partner's death(s).

I don't know what the cost is now. I did this 10 years ago (pre-arranged that is).

:kick:

12. I'd rather my legacy not be
a headstone in a seldom visited cemetary. Pre-arranging is a good idea. My Dad and Stepmom did that, they let us know ahead of time and it was very helpful. Dad had the music picked out, pallbearers, the whole nine yards. We truly appreciated that.
