Bush in holy gaffe
09/06/2007 14:10 - (SA)

Vatican City - US President George W Bush drew gasps at the Vatican on Saturday by referring to Pope Benedict XVI as "sir" instead of the expected "His Holiness", pool reporters said.

They could clearly hear the US leader say "Yes, sir" when the pope asked him if he was going to meet with officials of the lay Catholic Sant'Egidio community at the US embassy later during his visit.

A handful of pool reporters were on hand as Benedict greeted Bush at the door of his private library ahead of a private audience of about half an hour.

On his way to see the 80-year-old pontiff, the US leader apparently recognised someone he knew, and could be heard greeting the person with a casual "How ya doin'?"

The pool reporters also noted Bush's relaxed posture, crossing his legs "Texan style" while facing the pope across his desk in the private study of the apostolic palace.

1. Well, you don't expect to find 2 "your holinesses" in the same room
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 11:40 AM by jazzjunkysue
at the same time, do you?

After all, the Pope was only elected by the cardinals. But God speaks directly to George.

Nothing worse than 2 guys with jesus complexes duking it out for turf.

(Having fun imagining George's thought processes, not making a statement about the Pope.)

God won't have to use his frequent flyer miles to travel between Rome and White House.

I wonder if their meeting went something like this.

Bennis: God told me I'm the chosen one.
Bush: No, I'm the chosen one.
Bennie: No way, I am.
Bush: No way.
Bennis: Way.
Bush: I'm the chosen one, I'm the chosen one. ( while jumping up and down and pointing at himself)

8. Well, Bush is a dunce, but....
The Pope is no genius either. He's the leader of a medieval cult, which oppresses women, and seeks to assimilate native cultures. Bush should have presented him with a scum bag, which would be symbolic of both of them.

12. But when you're a guest of Cardinal Rat, you play by Card. Rat's rules.
If you're not under the Rat's Roof, then it's okay to address him as 'sir', especially since GWB is not an RC.

17. Fair enough. But remember ...
when Bush bristled because a reporter at a press conference addressed him as "sir" instead of "Mr. President?" I also believe in the adage of: following protocol, so that no one can say they've been offended. But ultimately, to us onlookers, the question is, "How much lipstick do these pigs require?"

21. I think it is an open-leg cross with ankle on top of thigh
as opposed to the closed-leg cross where hamstring is laying on thigh.

Some men may find it emasculating to do a closed leg cross. So I'm sure you never see Bush with a closed-leg cross.

And read how Loven of the AP rewrites the scandal that is bush.....

"Bush tours Vatican in style "

:puke:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070609/ap_on_re_eu/bush_s_royal_treatment_1

<snip>

VATICAN CITY - President Bush moved through the Vatican like royalty on Saturday. Live television coverage recorded the arrival of his limousine in the courtyard and showed the president stepping from his car. But it didn't stop there.

Television cameras were positioned throughout the Vatican to capture Bush's every move as he walked through marbled hallways, turned left and right on his way to the private library of Pope Benedict XVI. Bush was escorted by delegation of Italian noblemen, members of Rome's aristocracy. They are known as the pope's gentlemen.

American presidents have gotten splashy treatment since Ronald Reagan established diplomatic relations with the Vatican in 1984.

Seated on opposite sides of a desk, the president and the pope made small talk during a photo opportunity. Bush surprised some Vatican watchers by addressing the pope as "sir" rather than "your holiness."

The ANSA news agency headline said: "Gaffe Presidente."

Bush appeared very relaxed, leaning back in his chair with his legs crossed as the pope sat upright. Typically, visitors show deference and physical respect in the pontiff's presence.

26. It didn't say that the pope was offended at all
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 04:06 PM by DesertRat
The gasps were by others there, just as they were when Bush gave Angela Merkel a "neckrub" during last years G8 summit.

There is certain protocol that one follows around other heads of state, the pope, the Queen of England, etc. It doesn't mean that they are more "special". It's just centuries old traditions, a sign of respect and of following customs of other cultures, etc.

Acting very casual and refusing to show the respect isn't something to admire. In fact it shows the rest of the world that our president thinks he's above following such time honored traditions and will do and say what he pleases. I think that it sends the message that Bush thinks he is the one who is "special" because he does and says whatever he pleases.
