14. I know....
I couldn't watch it.

This one was for Ruffian.

RIP Ruffian.
RIP Barbaro.

17. I was too young for the Ruffian tragedy, although I saw the film
while Barbaro was still trying to recover.

Horse racing as a sport is barbaric and cruel. The Barbaro tragedy really opened my eyes.

Horses love to run and compete with each other, yes, but they shouldn't be forced to do so for human amusement.

20. How true....
Loving to run is not necessarily loving to race.

10. It was a good race. She stumbled a bit out of the gate and beat Curlin in the stretch.
She sure runs pretty.

And I missed the damned race.

Nuts.

15. That horse has some serious lung capacity.
And that's what it takes to win there.

Did you note how many times she changed lead?

I cannot believe I missed it. I have been so bummed after learning about Monkeyman earlier today that I went to my Gallery and immersed myself in art and music.

18. I wish there were more mile-and-a-half races.
I think the owners don't like 'em 'cause there're more breakdowns, but I like a race that allows time for more strategy and rewards endurance. Other than the stumble out of the gate, she ran a lovely race.

19. They oughta run the long ones on turf.
I saw John Henry run some really long match races and that horse lasted forever.

11. After stumbling out of the gate no less!
I was so excited. I almost always cry during horse races, no clue why, but this one I was jumping up and down the minute I saw her start to move up. She was placed perfectly but then Curlin broke out before being boxed in. THAT was a horse race.

Hooray for fillies! I have always preferred my mares to the boys.

Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 06:25 PM by Old Broad
Rags to Riches is a chestnut and the other is a bay in blinkers.

She also does not run on the grass.

21. and also where's that huge white patch on her forehead????
Nope that's not Rags in that 2nd picture. Jeez I get so excited watching thoroughbreds.....they are just the extreme of natural power. Wow..... the movie about Ruffian is on tonight.... ABC @ 9:00/8:00 CST. Did anyone else think ABC's coverage sucked??? I wrote to them, the audio with trainers and jockey's before the race was just a disaster. :puke: Feel sad the owners are the richest duo in Great Brittan. Like they need more $$$$ :eyes: But she sure is a beautiful horse.

22. My brother in law stopped over before going to the track
asking if we wanted to place a bet. My husband gave him $1,000 cash (he won a golf tourney yesterday), and I picked the horse. I took Rags to Riches, just because it was a girl and not a fave.

I'm not sure how much we won yet, but I think we're going to the Caribbean!!!!

Any idea what the odds were on her?

Wow. You probably feel like you won the lottery!

Hell, I don't even know you but your post made me smile. Good for you!

Wait till later in the year for the Caribbean trip, though. Too hot and muggy right now.

25. A $2 bet got $10.60
My brother in law is taking 10% and the IRS will probably take some, so I'm not sure how much we're going to get, but when the snow flies here, we're off to Antigua!

less 10% =$4770 less probably 35% for the IRS = Approx $3100 take home.

Not bad!

The only 2 times I happened to watch horse races in the last few years, I saw them break their leg. A sign to me I should not watch them.
