The camp in Iraq where my nephew is stationed was attacked last night
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 05:43 PM by Poiuyt
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Six civilian detainees were killed and at least 50 more were wounded in an attack on the U.S.-run Camp Bucca prison in southern Iraq on Saturday.

"No U.S. service members were killed or injured," the military said in a statement.

No additional information was immediately available. Camp Bucca is one of two Multi-National Force Iraq prisons holding more than 19,000 detainees. The other is Camp Cropper, near the Baghdad airport.

His enlistment was supposed to end this month but has been extended. He's been lucky to have been stationed in relatively safe locations (as safe as you can get in Iraq). My sister is very nervous about these last weeks.

1. This must be terrifying...
I'm glad that there's no report of US Servicemen hurt, but just knowing that this site is a target must be very hard for you.

2. Shit, oh dear!
I couldn't take it. My nephew has gone over once, and is due to go back in September. He knows how I feel and I know, how, he needs to believe in his mission. I am supportive of him as an individual and for his heroic choice, of a Patriotic Act in these troubled times. I worry so about all the kids. It is so disheartening.

3. I just got a call from Chris!
He wanted me to hear it from him in person that he was okay. They have been hearing shells going off since he got there last spring but this is the first one that hit close. 2 1/2 more months then he is home and OUT of the military. I was really proud of him when he enlisted 6 years ago but since then things have gone so bad that I just want him out.

4. Thank goodness he's safe and sound.
I've been praying for him. This about scared me to death when I saw it. If only he were on his way home now. :(

5. I'm glad to hear he's okay
as well as the rest of the camp.

My son is a Marine but he's been in Japan the whole time. I just don't know how you survive this -- I hope he gets home very soon!

7. Glad to hear he is ok and hoping you are too.
I hope his remaining time in Iraq is really boring and he comes home soon and healthy.

6. Glad to hear he and his buddies are ok.
They're guarding a prison? No wonder. The Iraqi people want their people released.
The base where my son was stationed was attacked on a daily basis with IED's.
His first two weeks there 8 soldiers were killed. They blew up the gym and the PX.
I was freaking out; so I can understand your sister being freaked out and you!
Especially at a prison! I'm guessing that's pretty well guarded and patrolled.

Hang in there...hopefully your nephew will be home soon, :grr: safe and sound.

8. Poiuyt and I appreciate all your good thoughts
For the most part Chris describes his job as "babysitting for 1100 three year olds." He never mentioned the shelling before, because he knows I will go brain dead with worry. Yes, denial is not just a river in Egypt.

He takes after his grandfather, an AF pilot in WWII who, after having his one crash, told HIS mom that he was hurt falling off a bicycle.

9.  I hope your nephew is managing
the impact of the attacks. Please convey our best regards and good wishes to your sister for her son's well-being.

Hang in there and take care of yourself, also.
