You 'know' a man is a terrorist but cannot prove it. What do you do?

If you are President Bush, you have the CIA pluck him off the streets, deny him access to anyone and fly him to Egypt, Syria or Jordan to be tortured. This is known as extraordinary rendition.

You might have thought torture happened only in the barbaric Middle Ages. But as renditions expert Stephen Grey and human rights organisation Amnesty have recently pointed out, it is happening right now with the full approval of a supposedly civilised nation: the United States.

The US has also sanctioned the shackling of prisoners’ limbs, the threat of dog attacks and the prolonged maintenance of stress positions or repetitive exercises while attacking China, Eritrea, Burma, Iran and Libya for carrying out those same abuses.

1. Let's go back to 1693....

You "know" that Anne Foster is a witch, so you are perfectly justified in torturing her so that she will name others who are the servants of Satan. Well, maybe you don't know for sure, but she's old, poor, from a less than prominent family (a daughter was murdered by her drunken husband a couple of years before and hanged for the crime; guilt by association), and has quit attending mandatory worship services (surely nothing to do with depression over the loss of her husband followed by the loss of her daughter in so brutal a way). And yes, by jiminy, she agrees with EVERYTHING you the torturers--er, inquisitors--er, interrogators-- suggest she had done, including naming names of others that those in power don't really like. Until you ask her to name her only remaining daughter and that woman's child. This Anne refused to do, so she was condemned to death, only to die in the Salem Jail that December.

It takes until around 1707 for the witch hysteria to die down and for the colonial government of Massachusetts to hand a formal letter of apology to her heirs.

My guess is it will take the US Government far longer to ever admit the errors of their ways.
