"Enhanced Interrogation Techiques"
"What was previously just a set of allegations is now proven: large numbers of people have
been abducted from various locations across the world and transferred to countries where they have
been persecuted and where it is known that torture is common practice

Some individuals were kept in secret detention centres for periods of several years, where they were subjected to degrading treatment and so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” (essentially a euphemism for a kind of torture), in the name of gathering information, however unsound, which the United States claims has protected our common security.

Bush & Co. repeatedly say "the US does not torture or condone torture"

Obviously a game of semantics on the part of the US government.

What in the HELL is going on at these places?

I know, I don't want to think about it either, and what can we do about it anyway. But this is outrageous, criminal conduct by our government, roundly condemned by all Human Rights Organizations around the world.

How can we hold our leaders accountable? I'm hoping congressional investigations on Guantanimo will start to address this.

1. Are hearings on Guantanamo in the works?
I haven't heard anything. But I hope there will be some - it's long overdue.

2. I've heard on NPR some reports that some congressional dems
are making some noise to this effect. - to have hearings on Guantanamo Bay, to close it down.

nothing specific - anybody else hear anything about this?

3. "enhanced interrogation techniques" - I think Frank Luntz made that one up.
He's a master at taking negative words/phrases and coming up with alternatives to make them sound benign, even positive. And the media swallows phrases like this without questions.

4. Frank Luntz is like the anti-George Lakoff
His methods must be studied carefully - if not to emulate them, then to find a way to defuse any slogans that come out of his mouth.
