Libby’s Supporters Learn That Letters Take on New Life on the Web
Well! I hope you're satisfied with yourselves! You... you... you big meanies you!

Libby’s Supporters Who Wrote to Judge Learn That Letters Take on New Life on the Web

By Noam Cohen (New York Times)
Published: June 11, 2007

In what may be a sign of things to come, the lawyers for I. Lewis Libby Jr. last month invoked the rarely used courtroom tactic: the “bloggers can be mean” defense.

(snip)

When representatives of the news media asked that the letters be released, Mr. Libby’s lawyers argued against that, saying it “needlessly risks undermining the fair administration of justice.”

Then, alluding to the sometimes combative world of online media, they added there was “the real possibility that these letters, once released, would be published on the Internet and their authors discussed, even mocked, by bloggers.”

(snip)

Asked about the amount of mocking he had seen online, Bill Moore, a lawyer who contributes to the blog Watching Those We Chose (proctoringcongress.blogspot.com), said: “There is some, sure — not an undue amount. Some of the stuff that goes on needs to be mocked.”

The underclass is getting so uppity these days, huh? Discussing the ruling clique. And even mocking them. Good heavens! :swoon:

Public figures should be able to secretly write drippy letters of support with no blowback.

3. The phrase "grasping at straws" comes to mind.
Although, since he had to listen to Dick Cheney to get his orders, I think he has a good shot at a temporary insanity defense.

4. Heaven forbid that His Libbyness could be mocked.
I mean, honestly, just who the hell do these people think they are?

These are the same people whose minions have yet to stop mocking President Clinton, and not once has that good man's behavior even hinted at the shallow egotism of thin Republican skin.

It's just incredible.

Churchill said, When you're going through Hell, keep going.

Bush leads us into Hell, and retires to his tract house and barren acres that he calls a ranch.

28. My family thanks heaven that our cats can't talk - they would mock us endlessly!
My adult daughters and I once had an hysterically funny conversation as to what our cats would say to each other about us if they could talk. Where did the term "catty" come from anyway?

not to apologize.

If there's anyone who should apologize, it's those, including many of the bloviating authors involved, who've made a mockery of the Constitution and American jurisprudence.

11. For the last six years
Democrats, and people who disagreed with bush and his henchmen have been subjected to all kinds of slurring and slamming. We don't get the chance to stand up in front of the corporate media TV cameras and mikes and defend ourselves. Now we have the internet and TRUTH and the republicans don't like it.

29. These letters are nauseatingly self-serving of their authors' self-importance.
Bolton, Rumsfeld, Kissinger & Wolfovitz - all go on ad nauseam with paragraphs detailing what incredibly powerful and important people THEY are, and in describing their contacts with Scooter, they bloviate on how extremely hard THEY worked and how fortunate the country has been to have THEIR services - and Scooter was there helping. Remeber those cheesy commercials for Shake-N-Bake, where the little twin girls chirupped, "And I hepped". (they couldn't pronounce "helped"). That evidently was Scooter's role - he helped. And of course the ultimate help he provided was lying to derail a criminal investigation. Since he had such close contact with all these GOP VIPs, he's gotta know where each one of them has various bodies buried - so the LEAST they could do was write these letters in hopes of making Scooter keep his mouth shut should Bush fail to pardon him.

23. So, their argument was that publishing the letters would facilitate the First Amendment?
The nerve! Why should the judge make it easier for the public to engage in the discussion of important activities of governance and jurisprudence?

The lawyers who prepared that brief should be laughed out of the Bar Association, since they have obviously never actually read the damned Constitution.

Libby is a traitor.

That may come as news to the liars that have been supporting Bush's Iraq War for 4 years, but it is the truth.
