Drunk people don't stop driving or drinking
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 06:38 AM by SoCalDem
the act of being drunk removes that little voice in your head that says "don't"..

One makes it home safely or does NOT crash their car into someone else, when the drunk sobers up, they realize that they have once again 'gotten away with it", and probably will again.

It's human nature to think that "it won't happen to ME!", so they repeatedly push the envelope until it DOES happen to them.

People with money, power or influence get special consideration, but history proves that they do not usually learn from their experience.

What I always wonder about is how bars escape serious scrutiny. Bars are places that exist to serve liquor/wine/beer to people who rarely walk there or take public transportation. There is the "designated driver' thing, but I'm inclined to think that many DDs are the ones who drank the least, but still may have had some..

Hilton & Lohan come to mind.. Why have the clubs they frequented not lost their liquor licenses? Hilton was seen frequenting them before she was 21, and Lohan is not yet 21, so how do these places continue to skate?

Parents are often charged with crimesd when underage kids get drunk at their houses, but "chi-chi" clubs seem to get a pass..

Everyone thinks of the grubby guy with a bottle of Ripple in a greasy wrinkled paper bag when the word "alcoholic" is mentioned, but there are many alcoholics on the road every day.. they are in the car in front of you, behind you, beside you.. They may even drive your kid's carpool..Until they wreck their car or get caught, or kill someone, you never know who they are..and they keep driving..:(

1. I recall
from a safety lecture in the Navy (we had lectures on every subject in the universe) that at any given time at least ten percent of people driving vehicles were impaired with either alcohol or other drugs.

Recently the pitcher for the St Louis Cardinals was driving drunk in the morning talking on his cell phone when his car hit a truck which was stopped to help another motorist. The pitcher was killed. What does the pitcher's father do? Sue the truck driver of course.

2. In many states, an establishment that serves liquor by the glass
is legally responsible if they serve a drunk and the drunk goes out and drives and is involved in an accident. I believe that in even more states they are liable to civil suits. Around here, the problem is with package stores--the counties are "dry" so folks drive to Missouri to buy their booze, and many start sampling before they get home. I'll never forget having to walk past a fatal crash where the cases of beer (and several opened, empty cans) were scattered amidst the wreckage. The kid who died was to have been married the next day.

3. We have a acquaintence who's lost his license, done time (including in Mexico),
and still insists on getting behind the wheel (he's a classic alcoholic too).

He wonders why we are no longer friends.

Most clubs will provide a free cab if you are intoxicated, especially the "chi-chi" ones in our area--and some of our clubs are often frequented by Hollywood's "finest."

Maybe the laws are tougher in our area, but the clubs try very hard to prevent people from DWI, from the service people to the bouncers to the parking valets.

Driving drunk is just selfish and stupid. Period.
