If Al Gore is elected President in 2008, does anyone share our worry? |
|
If Hillary wins, the right-wing machine will be happy having her around as their favorite punching bag, because she'll never cause them too much trouble.
But Al Gore? My wife and I would love to see him elected (and drafted, if need be to get him there) but he's the right-wing machine's worst nightmare. Worse than JFK or RFK or MLK. That's the source of our worry - that he wouldn't last very long because they'e target him for assassination. This thought must have entered Tipper Gore's mind at some time during the past 4 years, and perhaps this is the real question that keeps his hat from entering the ring. The country is better off with him as President than as private citizen, but it's also better off with him alive, President or not.

Sure, it's possible. But I just don't see it. Look at how unpopular Bush is, and yet there haven't been any attempts - at least, not in this country. Assassinating a president is serious stuff, and most would-be assassins get caught long before they pose a serious threat.

4. I suppose I'm a conspiracy theorist... |
|
because I don't think they ever got the right people who murdered JFK, RFK and MLK, and I don't think JFK Jr.'s death was accidental either. When the right wing takes its time to get it done right, they always get away with it, especially with the media in their pocket.
I personally don't think they'd waste more than 12 months before they offed Gore. And the media would be parading another patsy before our eyes for years to come, and yes, they'd all get away with it all over again.
Bush hasn't been assassinated because people like us don't do things like that. The people behind Bush do.

if that's right, what's the rationale behind the attempt to impeach Bill Clinton? I read it as an attempted coup, even at the time, but would they then have tried in assassinate a President Gore?

42. Well, you raise two different points entirely... |
|
Re: Clinton, who knows the real rationale, all we know is that they were trying to destroy him both legally and in the media from the day he denied Shrub's Pappy a second term. As I see it, they were angry with themselves for not seeing him coming, and took it out on "Slick Willie". They became so morbidly obsessed with him that they've been setting Hillary up as their scapegoat ever since he left office.
As for Al Gore, I don't think they were that concerned with him back in 2000. But now that he's grown a set of dinosaur cajones, attacking the Bushie neocons across the board for the past 4 years or so, even smoothly humiliating them in a televised Congressional hearing on global warming and forcing Bush to finally acknowledge the man-made aspect and seriousness of global warming And they know they're not likely to be able to discredit him over a blow job, and that he is the only potential electable candidate with real spine, who won't back down when challenged or smeared, they must by now be really worried about what he'd do in the White House. And if he does the things we'd like him to, which I think he would, they're going to start behaving like cornered hyenas, which could be dangerous to Gore's life and limb.

But Gore is a pro-NAFTA "Democrat" that backed the Telecommunications Act. Basically, we have a right wing propaganda media partly due to Clinton/Gore. And it is branching out into repressing smaller, poorer magazines now -consolidating repression of real news. He's no Feingold or Kucinich. He would be a Republican, Goldwater-style in the 70's.

17. By now I imagine Gore has rethought his 1990's pro-NAFTA stance. |
|
The right wing media is a creation of Ronald Reagan, not Clinton/Gore. Reagan did away with the equal time rule/fairness doctrine in the media, and corrupted the FCC and anti-trust law enforcement to the point that now only 6 major right-wing corporations own virtually all of the media.

15. my very rethuglican neighbors want Gore!! the wife told me her husband |
|
said 3 months ago..Gore will run and he will win by a landslide..
this is a man with a huge business in NY ..with Big $$$$$$$$$$$$
and these are people who go to dinners and luncheons for big $$ with Cheney and little lord pissy pants..when they are in NYC ..for campaign stuff..
and the wife told me..they will even campaign for Gore!!
The husband told my hubby last night ..the dems better get Gore to run..because he as a lifelong repug can not vote for anyone running now!!..on either side...but he would gladly vote and do work for gore..he said the worst mistake this country made was not fighting when little lord pissy pants did a supreme court coup...
my hubby told him..many did fight ..hubby told him..just too many sleep walked through it all!!
and my hubby gave him Gore's new book and Lee Iacocca's book to read on the beach.
now understand this..we have had a long running feud over little lord pissy pants and these people!!
They turned me in to the township when i put big signs on my house that pissy pants is a murderer!!
so indeed the tide is turning..but it is going to turn i fear only if Gore gets in the race..other wise i think many will stay home and not vote ( which is fine by me if they never vote again!!)
but even the hardest core rethugs seem to have had it with this bunch in our white house, and the rethug congress..

33. its their conscience..they realize that pissy pants has destroyed many American values! |
|
when we saw them night before last they had just watched some movie on HBO about the indians..the man said to my husband ( knowing my husband is an indian) that the indians really got screwed ..then somehow Vietnam came up in the conversation..and this rethug man said ( jokingly as he is a little older than my husband) that he was too young to have gone to Vietnam..and he asked my hubby..did you get drafted..my husband said yes he got drafted..then this rethug said..well i never went..and i chimed in..none of you rethugs ever fight..none of you ever put the uniform on..you are all freaking chicken hawks..you send other people's kids to fight over bogus wars!!..i said look down this street..you are all rich rethugs..and not one of your kids is in uniform..but you were all the biggest damn cheerleaders for this war..i said..you are all liars and hypocrites...( that is when my husband kicked my foot to shut me up...) my husband is very mild mannered and non political...but my hubby said that he and all our neighbors are responsibile for what is happening now..and that they need to educate themselves and they need to start dialog and discuss what they have wrought on this nation with pissy pants and the republicans..and he said..don't blame dems for raising taxes..when it is republicans that always leave a damn hefty debt someone has to be responsible to pay off!!
afterwards my husband told me don't come on so strong..i said bullshit i want these people to feel responsibile ..because they are responsibile for where we are today..but hubby said they will shut down listening if they are attacked like i come on...
i said ..you do it your way i will do it my way..i said i hold them all responsible for a damaged government today because they continue to shirk their responsibility by people not discussing pissy pants in front of them..i said i will stay in their faces..and i will hold them accountable..and i will let them know every day i hold them accountable!!
So hubby and i have two different methods...but this conversation came up because the lady9 neighbor) called me two days ago and said her niece (adult) was visiting and had the same feelings i have about pissy pants..and she would love to talk to me..i said fine i would love to discuss the current and past events with her..but i said i would pull no punches..i would tell the truth no matter how uncomfortable it was for her!!
and that is when she said her husband said 3 months ago..Gore will run and he will win by a landslide...and that is how the conversation all began with these neighbors ..who have not discussed any of this since i had signs on my home.
and my husband a long time ago asked this man ..why are you a republican..and the man could not answer, other than ..his parents were republican..in a very Italian family..and they seemed to follow the family tradition with no idea why they are republican..but they are die hard republicans..i know...it sounds silly..but it is like family tradition type of thing..
so now they are seriously looking to Al Gore!!..because i think they are afraid..afraid of little lord pissy pants..and this cabal...
now we do have a family in the neighborhood who lost their son in WTC building 1 ..who is very vocal of their distain of little lord pissy pants..and i think this family is waking many up..as well i was flight crew for one of the airlines involved ..and i say at every neighborhood event..* lied and lies about 9/11 and i resent he uses my co-wokers deaths for politics ..so we are vocal aobut our feelings..and it is wearing the die hard rethugs down i believe.
but who knows how they think..i just make ( somewhat) funny comments to try to embarrass them ..of how totally ignorant rethuglicans are!!..every chance i can!!
Hey i am a Jersey gal..i get in people's faces..and i don't let go!!..and i can not be intimidated by anyone!!..and will never be about the lies of 9/11..i say it the way it is!!

I think most of us fall somewhere between you and your husband when confronting Rethugisms. It's one thing to write about it in blogs like DU, it's another to actually get in some wingnut's face about it person to person. I tend to shy away - because the only wingnuts I know are one uncle and three husbands of female couins from my wife's side of the family, and since she's close to her aunt I dare not, for the sake of family peace, tell any of them exactly what I think to their faces beyond saying that as long as they're addicted to Faux News and Rush Limbaugh I'll never agree with any of their political points. Once, when I told her uncle who blurted out among about 4 of us that "Ronald Reagan was our greatest President ever!" I put my arm around him, treating him like the old drunken ex-sailor he is, and said: "Come on, Stan, wake up - you're in mixed company here."

I don't see how Gore is the great left-wing hero, and Clinton is a right-wing shill.
On what major substantive issues do they differ?

If Al finally throws his hat in the ring the first thing I'll do is donate the max to his campaign, and the next thing I'll do is contact his campaign headquarters to volunteer my time and energy however they see fit.
The fact that I worry for his welfare would never stop me from supporting him.

your concerns are valid. he is the type of person that some people really would not want to be president. but knowing what I know about Al, I think he would recognize this and do everything in his power to protect himself. what else can we ask. it's certainly not a reason to not run. his best protection is a MORE liberal vice president who scares them even more.
