1. $24,900 for all 4 right? Front 2 for hands and back 2 for feet?

2. Why don't they cost $5,000?
I bought a beautiful, brand new, 4-wheel drive truck for less than one of those things.

And who's doing the parking, anyways?

23. 100 odd kg of lithium ion battery probably.
And I doubt you'd see much (if any) change out of $5000 for the electronics, motors and drive train, fuggedabout the bling.

Batteries will always be the price killer for electric vehicles.

For vehicles in the class of the one depicted I don't think there's a better solution than pneumatics.

They are phenomenally simple; have a decent range (100+ km (up to 200 km if the overall weight is shaved to the bone)); can be recharged in minutes at appropriately equipped filling stations, or about 4 hrs with the built in compressor plugged into the wall.

Estimated cost for a refill is about $2. And someone was raving about a six seater in India the other day. Price tag was in the sub 10K bracket IIRC.

3. I'm pretty sure that I don't want one of those.
Not for that price, anyhow.

(OK. Not for any price)

4. Why?
Why does energy efficient have to be so sci-fi ugly?

5. That used to be built here
by Corbin Motors. It was marketed as the Sparrow, alongside its hybrid counterpart, the Merlin.

Tom Corbin had a great idea but a pretty lousy business model, and ended up filing bankruptcy in 2003. Myers bought the inventory out of liquidation.

10. I've seen that shape before...

It was made by Messerschmitt, the makers of the ME 109

And the ME 262.

And the ME 163 hydrogen peroxide fueled rocket fighter..

Most people have no clue just how nasty hydrogen peroxide can be..

12. It'll be a nightmare to survive a high-speed or moderate-speed collision with an SUV
An explorer would rip through that thing like tinfoil. This car is perhaps more suited to inner-city commutes and cities with narrow streets built before the car but ideal for small vehicles such as that.

A Smart Car, featured in the Da Vinci Code, could seat two instead of one anyway:

I'm trying to picture it on I-95 w/the semi trucks. I just don't know.

I was looking at this wonderful car when I was searching in Wiki, and you'd probably be happier with one of these suckers:

They are priced at between $12,500 and $14,995! Dealers are available throughout most of the continental United States!

20. But they only go 25mph
Edited on Tue Jun-12-07 01:19 AM by wtmusic
classified as NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) they can only go up to 35mph by law.

The Myers registers as a motorcycle and can drive full-on freeway speeds -- 75mph+.

21. True, but if you're going to use it on the freeway...
you aren't going far with the limited range, might as well stick to side streets and save 10,000 odd dollars.

19. I drove the Myers last year
and the performance was downright impressive. Up to 75mph (for real).

Drove this one today:

$10K, 40mph, 40 miles. The world's coolest golf cart.

The options are multiplying for electric cars.

Unless every other vehicle on the road was like that one, no way would I drive something like that, especially here in SeattleLand. :scared:

The EMTs are going to need it the first time the wind blast from a passing semo blows you into a light pole. :-)

25. headlights are wrong too.
I know you shouldn't shave that close to a motorcycle, but one reason for headlights on the corners of the vehicle, is to make sure other drivers KNOW where the corners of the vehicle are.
