I've watched sports programs from Europe in the past and was informed by the announcers when whistling erupted from the audience that that was not "cheering" or a sign of approval like we are used to in America, but a sign of derision or disapproval akin to the "raspberry."

Could the same thing be true in this instance?

Sure, I saw a several "well-wishers," but the whistlers really caught my attention.
