Third Day of Bridge Attacks in Iraq
Spike May Indicate New Campaign Against Transport Routes
Posted 2 hr. 43 min. ago

Insurgents bombed a bridge over a major highway in Iraq for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. Bridge bombings have been on the rise in recent months, but this week's attacks indicate a new campaign against key transport routes may have begun.

Tuesday morning's attack partially destroyed a bridge linking the villages of al-Qariya al-Asriyah and al-Rashayed in northern Babil province on the main north-south highway about 35 miles south of Baghdad, and just six miles south of the bridge destroyed on Sunday.

The AP reports local police said about 60% of the bridge was damaged, though cars could still pass over it via one lane. But debris from the blast fell on the main north-south expressway below, further complicating efforts to reopen that main artery, closed after Sunday's blast dropped masses of concrete onto the roadway.

2. "Proof" (I'm sure) that the 'surge' is working really REALLY well!!!!
AAAANNNDDDD,...why the hell are we still occupying an oil-rich nation whose people DO NOT WANT US THERE?!?!?!!!!

I repeat,....

For GOD'S sake,...leave those poor people ALONE and leave them the resources of their own nation!!!!

Oh, I forgot, 'we MUST convince them that, accepting western ideals (e.g. MONEY IS GOD) is GOOD for them'.

*blech*

Hey, you so-called "conservatives",...when does the traditional values of compassion and honesty and hard work kick in? Do those values kick in AFTER you loot and murder and pillage innocent people,...WAY AFTER????

3. Most Recommended diary on Kos is about the bridges

You have to wonder if they're doing it to choke off supply lines/reinforcements in preparation for a Tet-type massive attack on the green zone

4. That's exactly what's been suggested; there is definitely a method
to their 'madness'. I wonder if the generals are a tad concerned yet.

5. Oops. Forgot my power to recommend.
I'd imagine,...they are certainly intending to cut off supply in preparation for a major offensive (or defensive, depending upon your point of view).

Geez. BushCO and the neocons have f-upped the whole M.E.,...and our own country, simultaneously.

9. Bingo!
Maybe not a Tet style attack but an attack is in the works ...
and no doubt "they" have people inside the Green Zone.

Call up all College Republicans and give em 3 weeks basic
and fly their asses to Iraq ASAP.

7. Anyone who's spent time with a toddler knows this strategy
It can take you two minutes to painstakingly stack building blocks into a tower, and about .0003 seconds for a toddler to knock it down. You both laugh, and start again.

Running a society can take all kinds of painstaking effort, from bridges to water supply to electricity to what have you. And all that effort can be blown to smithereens in 10 minutes. What we're doing in Iraq isn't working; doing it more isn't going to work, either. It's time our country grew up, if only a little, and jettisoned its child-like faith in the redemptive power of violence to solve all problems.

8. Meanwhile, Amy reported today that someone has been arrested
over a plot to assassinate Karzai. I don't see anything at her site, though.

Hell in a handbasket. :(

10. If you're talking about the rocket attack Sunday, here's a bit about it:

Karzai Is Uninjured As Rockets Hit Nearby
Attack on President Claimed by Taliban

By Griff Witte and Javed Hamdard
Washington Post Foreign Service

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 10 -- The Taliban carried out an apparent attempt to assassinate Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday, firing rockets that missed him by several hundred yards as he spoke to a group of elders.

No one was injured in the attack, and Karzai was able to complete his speech. But the incident underscored the threat the Taliban continues to pose 5 1/2 years after it was toppled from power in a U.S.-led invasion and three months into a major push by international forces to win back territory controlled by insurgents.

17. I've been waiting to hear of reports of sustained attacks on supply lines
It seems that the Iraqis would have started attacking our vunerable supply lines from day one, maybe now they're going to do the powel thing cut off the head then kill the body.
