14. It was the last female White Rhino in Zimbabwe. The male is
injured and undergoing treatment. There's still a few left, but not many.

19. in Zambia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_rhino

There are two subspecies of White Rhinos; as of 2005, South Africa has the most of the first subspecies, The Southern White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum). Their population is about 11,600, making them the most abundant subspecies of rhino in the world.

The Northern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni), formerly found in several countries in East and Central Africa south of the Sahara, is considered Critically Endangered. Their wild population has been reduced from about 500 in the 1970s to only about four today. <2>

According to BBC, there are only thirteen northern white rhinos left in the world as of 2007.

Since he's not really a real hunter, ya know.

9. Weren't there a few left in captivity?
These may have been the last two in the wild, or
in a particular area. I was talking to a naturalist
2 years ago, and they were expected to be extinct in
the wild very shortly.

10. They were the last two white rhinos *in Zambia*
There are still white rhinos elsewhere in Africa.

That does not, however, excuse these poachers from being giant douchebags. :grr:

20. Were these from a breeding farm?
The white rhino
The southern white rhino, rescued from near extinction a century ago, stands as one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories. From a single population of barely 20 animals in 1885, there are now more than 8,440 in 247 wild populations, with an additional 704 animals in captive breeding institutions worldwide. Numbers continue to increase in the wild, and the white rhino is now classified as Lower Risk – Conservation Dependent.

By contrast, the situation facing the future of the northern white rhino is critical. In 1960, there were an estimated 2,250 animals; today, only 25 animals are known to exist in the wild in a single population. There are nine ageing and non-breeding animals in two zoos and the subspecies is classified as Critically Endangered.

16. "The dead female rhino's horn was apparently removed."
Rhino horns are used for aphrodisiacs in the far east (as are tiger penises), or carved into dagger handles, ceremonial cups, etc.
Ironic - aphrodisiacs made from nearly extinct creatures to help overpopulate the Earth with parasitic humans.
Goddamn fucking bastards. I'd like take that horn and do something quite UNaphrodisiac to the poacher with it!!!:grr:

17. Can't we privatize the making of White Rhinos? Outsource it or something?
Here in the U.S. every problem can be solved by letting a private corporation take over the duties.

Maybe we need a Halliburton Wildlife Refuge?

(Do I need to add the sarcasm smilie?)

Mostly sold in the Far East as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine, mostly purported virility elixirs.
