6. Kay Bailey Hutchinson's not as bad as what could be

she was light years better than Phil Gramm. When they were closing Air Force bases in San Antonio, she was right there with everyone else during the protests. She probably rates slightly below Lloyd Bentson.

While she is only excusing her own unpopular support of Bush's legislation, her words made me think about what might happen if Democrats adopted a similar attitude with respect to impeachment and ending Iraq war funding.

I brought this up in an earlier posting and got a snide response about Hutchison as a role model, which missed the point, completely. I'm no cheerleader for any Republican but it doesn't mean I can't see potential value in some of the arguments that they employ in defense of their decisions. Dumb or not, Hutchison revealed a strategy that deserves some consideration, in my opinion.

she was the Treasurer or something like that (a money-handling job). She was so incompetent that she list millions and millions (maybe incompetent by design, but that was the story). The mess she left behind took years to untangle.

When I got wind that she was running for Congress, I honestly didn't think she could win with that reputation, but then again, I wasn't aware of the cultishness of Republicans.
