Can someone explain to me why Repukes have a boner for Fred Thompson?
He has an undistinguished career in the Senate.

He has a pro-choice past.

He hasn't really outlined a platform in any way.

There are other conservatives in the Race (Huckabee, Brownback, Hunter, etc.) that are in lock step with the base.

Is it all just the fact that he's a southern actor with a deep voice? Are they really that superficial?

Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were the best communicators to run for president in my lifetime. And I think that quality got both of them elected moreso than any other tools they brought to the table.

13. Just read an article about a doctor having lymphoma
He was at Camp Lejune, NC. Now if he is having trouble and is spending millions and millions of dollars to help hold the disease in check, what about Deputy Dawg Thompson. Lymphoma is not curable, it won't go away. Some people say he probably would not finish out his term. And in the meantime he will get free hospitalization, all those millions this NC Doctor has spent at the publics expense. And you don't hear a damn thing in the MSM about him having cancer.

14. Have to add this...
Since the republicans know that Thompson would probably not be able to finish a term, do you think they have their own person in mind for VP. So if they could steal another election they would have a hand picked president when Thompson has to bow out.

20. The Republicans realize and believe IMAGE is Everything.
Rember how early Bush staged Photops. His advisors
believed and it is true that the Image created when
he was talking was more important than what he was
saying. If the American People leave with a positive\
visual image. ---He wins the day. This worked for Regan.
Regan was an actor who was "ON" as soon as he saw a Mike.
His staff created this unfurling flags, whatever was appropriate
to create the visual impression as a world leader. It worked
for Regan. He sold the country down the River and the people
stood there, clapped and re-elected him.

This was Rove and McKinnon's Plan for Bush. McKinnon had
created all this visual images of Bush as Texas Govenor.
He left Texas in a Mess but the people clapped and they
sent him to the WH.

Funny thing happened. It did not work in WH.They tried hard
enough but Iraq , SS, and other things just would not cooperate.

2ond Point: Republicans try to field candidates who have the
strong tough demeanor. I call it the "Daddy will take care
of you" candidates. This does help them only because our
candidates do not fight fire with fire.

Thompson and folksy manner, they believe, along with his acting
abiiity, and his "Daddy will take care of you and protect you
from those jihadists " demeanor---can beat any of our candidates.
The sooner Democrats realize Ideolgy only matters when they
are fighting Liberals. If he can win, he can say, I've found
the light on the Abortion Issue. Theirs are never held to the
same standard. If he looks like he can win, he will be fully
accepted endorsed and it is off to the races.

If Guilliani appears to be doing better, the same thing. He
will accepted and off to the races.

Mitt Rommney has been quietly racking up points in Primary States.
No one seems too concerned about his flip flopping.

Say aloud after me--The Republicans use all this stuff against
us because we permit them to get away with it.

Say aloud afrer ---Rpublicans go into any situation to win. win
win. How they win is of no importance.

It is us Liberals who get hung up on process, and while we
stew over process---the Republicans win.

Right Now Thompson looks like he could win. We will see.

33. Great post, except for this line:
The Republicans use all this stuff against
us because we permit them to get away with it.

WE don't let them get away with it, if you mean those posting here. if you mean WE as the dem party which 'represents' us, you have a point....up to a point.

it isn't WE, or the demparty, that let's them get away with it. It's the MEDIA....repeat after me (that's from your post), who has allowed the fascists since Reagan, as you noted (see On Bended Knee for the first in depth media deconstruction of media complicity in the fascinization of the US) that has allowed the pugparty to get away with EVERYTHING they've done since Reagan: stealing the 1980 election, Iran Contra, Iraqgate, SandL scandal, Fools for Scandal (WHitewater/Lewinsky/impeachment), stealing the 2000 and 2004 elections, as well as the UNCOUNTABLE criminal acts perpetrated under this most dishonest government in history

without the actively complicit corporate media, who could NOT avoid tipping their hand when Clinton left office, and, after eight years of relentless 'investigation' of his administration, turned a blind eye to EVERYTHING, and I mean everything (when it counted) that Cheney/Bush etal have 'accomplished' in their seven year smash and grab run.

If they'd done even a tiny tiny part of their job, covered just ONE of the myriad BFEE corruption stories, just ONE, he'd never have gotten 'elected' once, much less twice,

just compare his Harken/SEC imbroglio to what they did to Clinton over Whitewater, in which the PROSECUTORS even admitted that the Clintons were the victims!

but you get the picture, yes?

an informed populace wouldn't have let this happen, as their 'outrage' over the Clinton scandals fooled them into thinking that Cheney/Bush would restore honesty and integrity to the WH. They THOUGHT they were being told the truth over those eight years, even as they professed not to care, but the meme was planted, Gore was connected to the 'scandals' by the relentless, gop/corpmedia-fed eight year screamfest

that's why we're where we are today, and until there's some sort of de-concentration of big media, we will NEVER have our representative democracy restored, if we ever had one to begin with

All of the big names in the killer murder shitheel party have had their names tainted in the last couple years. McCain and Guiliani in particular are associated with the word 'scum'. So, they're grasping anything that doesn't have the immediate negative BushCheney taint.

Yes, consider st ronnie (senile fool, bad actor).

And it isn't only them, many of the corporate-media types seem to compete with each other to see who can be more superficial and frivolous.

But then, they've been selected for these "qualities"; flunkyhood; partisanship; etc.

34. They're emotional voters. They don't vote on issues
because they really don't know the issues. I'm serious. You wouldn't know the issues either if you watched Fox News and listened to hate radio. What they do understand is emotion. That's the draw of hate radio. As Will Ferrell in "Blades of Glory" says "It gets the people goin'!" Maybe they don't feel sexual passion anymore. Or genuine love and empathy. But they are able to feel rage. It gets them goin'! They can understand illegal immigration. It's easier than knowing who the Sunnis or Shiites are. Or climate change.
Fred Thompson appeals to these emotional voters. Who cares if they don't know what he stands for? Doesn't matter. He's an actor. They loved Reagan. They'll love Thompson.
