Bree Walker ‘Camp Casey’s’ New Caretaker
Bree Walker ‘Camp Casey’s’ New Caretaker
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

CRAWFORD — On Friday, Brad Friedman of BRAD BLOG.com broke the news that Los Angeles Progressive Radio host Bree Walker has purchased Cindy Sheehan’s five-acre ‘Camp Casey’ site in Crawford for $87,000, in response to Sheehan’s May 26 announcement that she would be selling the Camp Casey III land and ending her anti-war activities.

Walker, a former TV news anchor, interviewed Friedman and Sheehan on her Saturday afternoon radio program where she vowed to preserve the property as a peace memorial and garden, keeping it open to anti-war protesters. Both Walker and Sheehan described the site as "hallowed ground."

According to Friedman, Walker indicated that by purchasing the land, she was "cashing out capitalist corporate stocks and buying into a legacy of peace." She expanded on her hopes to move forward within the anti-war movement. "I will be learning what my role is to be, in being the new caretaker and landowner of Camp Casey," she explained to listeners during her weekend broadcast on KTLK AM1150.

"Like Cindy says, this is not a movement of right or left, it’s a movement of right or wrong. So my goal will try to be a unifying person there in Crawford, Texas. And if I’m not welcome in my anti-war activities? Well, too bad. Look out. You think Cindy Sheehan was tough? You just wait," Walker vowed.

She reiterated, during her comments about Camp Casey, that she hoped to continue its historic legacy. "That hallowed ground," Walker promised of the site located about seven miles from President Bush’s ranch, "will remain a place for protest against war, and a place for peace and freedom."

3. She's terrific on the air. Her commitment to progressive ideals is tangible.
She farts around a little when there are issues other than politics, but she discusses politics, she's on fire!

We remember Bree from when she was an anchor, when we lived in San Diego in the 80's. Always liked her a lot, but now we worship her!!

15. Yes, I am fedupinBushcountry also!
I miss San Diego. Even though it's nominally Republican, I don't remember it as being as bad as where I (foolishly) am now.

7. Bree was a San Diego news anchor for years.
She was a good one too. And HOT!
Do you know that she has a deformity in her hands? You never see them when she on-air. I saw her at the premier of "The Man of La Mancha" here in SD and was surprised to see that.

Love Bree!

9. From Wikipedia - She has ectrodactyly
A fusing of the fingers and toes. Makes me admire her even more.

Her media career started as an FM rock and roll disc jockey, on KUDL FM as "rock's lady of the night" in Kansas City in the middle 1970s. She soon after became New York City's first-ever female morning drive rock personality. She started her television career in 1980 at KGTV as a consumer advocacy reporter. She also dabbled in acting, appearing as herself in the end of the world SF thriller Without Warning and as television reporter Wendy Sorenson in The Chase, both in the early 1990s.

Her career took a surprising twist during the 2003 season when she watched the show Carnivàle, an HBO television series about a Depression-era carnival traveling through the Dust Bowl. She noticed that no cast member had ectrodactyly. She requested, created, auditioned, and won the role of Sabina, The Scorpion Lady.

Sabina appeared in three episodes during the 2005 season. She showcases her webbed hands as the series probes public attitudes toward persons with highly visible disabilities. In Walker's own words: "I really get to be me." Walker based Sabina on characters she knew existed in the 1920s and 1930s carnival sideshows with names like Lobster Girl or Lobster Boy. These were typically the best jobs persons with ectrodactyly could have, with most others being hidden away.

Walker furthered her acting career in 2006 by appearing as an inspirational woman with ectrodactyly on the fourth season premiere of Nip/Tuck. She and her children were also featured on an episode of TLC's My Unique Family.

She and former husband, NBC and HBO sportscaster, Jim Lampley jointly run Crystal Spring Productions, a film production company. She is also contributing writer for New Image magazine. Walker resides in Del Mar, California with her two children, both of whom also have ectrodactyly. Jim Lampley was her third husband. Her second husband, Robert Walker, from San Diego, California is an independent media production professional active in radio, television, and film production. She had no children with her first husband.

Walker can be heard on KTLK AM1150 in Los Angeles on Saturdays from 2-4pm PT as a progressive talk show host. http://www.ktlk1150.com

(Stumbled across it when I was looking for contact information, then wasted the evening trying to remember/retrieve my blogger password. Then managed to post the same thing three times. Oh well--I guess that proves I need to get a life.... ;-> )
