Explaining Why Attacking Iran Is Not A Good Idea (Randi's Rant 6/11/07)
conversation between randi rhodes & a caller--on attacking iran

randi: jack in chicago

jack: i believe senator lieberman is correct--we should attack iran because the insurgents are coming from iran. they're blowing up our tanks, blowiing up our kids, and if george bush wants to win this war in iraq--that's how to do it! if you win in iran you win in iraq.

randi: and because iraq went so well what do you think is gonna happen if we attack iran?

jack: we'll win in iraq.

randi: how do we do this? iraq had no military to speak of. they had no air force, they had no navy. they had just a little rag-tag bunch of what we call the elite republican guard.

iran has a million man army. iran has an air force, iran has everything you would need to be a legitimate military power.

so what's your plan? we attack iran. what do they do? what's the next move?

jack: we attack iran with our air forces.

randi: and what do we drop that's not going to be answered by iran, equally or worse?

jack: how are they gonna answer?

randi: well, they have a very elite military. it's not like iraq who had nothing. iraq had nothing--they were disarmed. iraq had nothing

jack: iraq had nothing. iran has everything. and that's what's causing this chaos in iraq.

randi: well, actually the al qaeda in iraq (which are just 2 percent of the fighting that's going on there) are saudis. and they're coming from sudan also. they're al qaeda that's been trained in sudan, in Khartoum, in saudi arabia. they're wahabbist islamists.

iran isn't even among that sect so how can you say that iran is the problem?

jack: iran is manufacturing the equipment that is killing our kids.

randi: and so when iraq and iran were at war and we were armming saddam hussein iran should have attacked us?

jack: (laughs) iran isn't capable of attacking us.

randi: oh yes they are. and if you only want to think as far as their little region do yo thin that if we attacked iran they wouldn't go after israel? and don't you know that would be the beginning of the third world war because russia and china would fight on the side of iran?

jack: why?

randi: because russia and china do business with iran. iran is their oil supplier.

jack: what happened to the civilized world we're supposed to be living in?

randi: forget it. this is how it parses out. this is what happens: you attack iran, china and russia fight with iran. do you think our military can handle that? knowing that it's broken? that this president has depleted us so that we have reservists and guardsman fighting our war in iraq for how many years now?

jack: randi, i agree with you except for one thing: we have no business being in iraq. period.

randi: i understand. but i want you to know that if we attack iran what's likely to happen. and i just want you to be prepared for world war three with us against china, russia, and iran, and syria.

jack: well, george bush keeps on saying win. win what?

randi: the oil law. once the oil law goes through the parliament (it's not likely to do. it's the benchmark. whenever you hear the world "benchmark" hear "oil law". that is what they're talking about. and as soon as the oil law goes through...which it won't...

why do yo think the iraqis aren't fighting for their own country? did you ever think of that?

jack: because they're not capable of that.

randi: of course they're capable of it. it's a six thousand year old society that fought for nine years against iran and ... won.

so you can't say they aren't capable. you have to think: why won't they fight for the government they have now? the reason is the government they have now is ripping them off--they don't think that government is worth fighting for. they know that's an illegitimate puppet government. that's why the iraqis are fighting each other. they're fighting to see who gets to pick the legitimate government.

because they won't fight for this government that's set up. you think they were gonna fight for the "viceroy" paul bremer? you think they were gonna fight for jafari or maliki? or allawi who was a cia operative?

they're not stupid people. they're a very sophisticated people. for 6,000 years this country has managed to be the cradle of civilization, managed to find their oil, managed to drill for it, managed to put it on the market, managed to sell it, to become very rich, built universities, had national health care.

they know what was wrong with their country. but they would rather see saddam hussein with national universities and health care and education for their kids and government jobs than they would this fake, illegitimate puppet government that is there for one purpose and one purpose only and that's to steal their oil.

if you pass an equatable oil law where they all are invested in the oil, they'll fight. you'd be surprised.

1. Maybe Jack in Chicago Would Find This Line of Argument More Convincing:
If We Attack Iran With Everything We Have, It Will Make All That Nice OIL Glow in the Dark
You might still be able to fill up your Hummer, but sitting in it would make your nuts fall off.
