The Kelsey Smith media overkill continues
Kelsey was kidnapped from a Target store parking lot and murdered a week and a half ago. Within 5 minutes of her kidnapping, the media in this area went into hyperdrive. Taking their cue from the Lacey Peterson school of journalism, our media has reported little else in the past ten days. Programming was interrupted to tell us every detail of the search for her before her body was discovered. That was a week ago today and Kelsey still monopolizes the news. A man was arrested for her murder within a day or two after her body was found. He is in jail on a $5 million bond. And the coverage continues.

Yesterday was her funeral. Yes, that was the top story on all local networks. Here is a link to her 322 page guestbook online. http://www.legacy.com/kansascity/GB/GuestbookView.aspx?PersonID=88744007

Yes I said 322 pages.

I know this sounds crass and unsympathetic but Kelsey is not the only person murdered in this metropolitan area this year. Why does this one case get so much attention?

I also can't help but wonder that if our media went into overkill every time a local soldier dies in Iraq, would our troops still be there?

Flame away. :)

8. So it's your local media you're complaining about
the OP, IMO, seems to be directed at all of the media ( not that any media these days is defendible )

9. The Tipper said, "all news is local"
Though it seems now truer in reverse. He seemed to be referring to that fact that national issues do have an impact on local races, that national policy does affect local elections. In this case, though, with helicopters, chase tv, internet, all you need for nationwide attention is to be the crime of the day. Cute white girl murdered has 'sizzle.' Homeless man beaten doesn't.

2. No flames from me....
I'd LOVE to see a major hue and cry with every single death in Iraq, military or Iraqi civilian.

The "National Inquirer" of the airwaves, cable and internet are much less than boring; they're criminal.

5. Amen
Until recently, the local paper didn't even report the deaths of soldiers from this area - except for the obituary.

7. I've been following it, & phase two may kick off any day.
The suspect is also being looked at in the disappearance of a Belton, Mo. girl, and I suspect he is connected to it.

Meanwhile, what ever happened to those three kidnapped G.I.'s?

11. Did you hear about the biker ride for her last weekend?
It was to raise money for the Kelsey Smith fund. That fund is being used to pay for her funeral.

A friend of mine lost his brother a month or so ago. He was hit by a car. They had to wait to have the funeral because the family doesn't have the money to pay for it. I guess we should have asked the bikers to hold a fundraiser.

12. I turned the news off and went to bed early
While I have sympathy for the family it certainly has been overkill here, now that she's in the ground they may stop chasing the corpse.

13. Does the family seem to want the publicity? I often think they don't but get overwhelmed
Edited on Wed Jun-13-07 09:10 AM by blondeatlast
and are in a very bad position to rein it in.

If it were my child, I'd only want my very closest family and friends aroung.
