14. The entire middle east is in flames |
|
As far as I can tell it has been in flames since the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
What does that entire region give the world? Oil.
Great scientific advances in the last century? Nope
Wonderful cultural achievements? Nope.
Do they manufacture products or feed billions through hard work? Nope.
So we buy the oil.
I am way past caring what they do.
We should go home and tell them: Sell us your oil if you want. If not, fine. Just don't expect us to keep cleaning up your messes. Be adults and stop blowing each other up. If you want to join the civilized world please do so. Until then the west is done with you.

30. True, but some of the blood is on the West's hands as well. |
|
Nobody is qualified to walk away from the Middle East as if they are the better person because no such person exists. If you walk away, you deserve to walk away without the satisfaction of knowing your side is better because it isn't: Not after what the US government has done in the region for decades.

virtually every word related to warfare is a French word: bayonet, grenade, interrogation, sabotage, invasion, occupation, artilary, etc. And many modern weapons had their start in Asia (gunpowder, missiles). Centuries of warfare are not limited to the Middle East.
the planet is much smaller than it used to be. we're all in this mess together.

watched the reports last night and it does not look very good across the middle east and worse there is no one government that has the power to stop it. get ready for double digit inflation if the middle east collapses..
oh wait a minute--it`s the rapture! jesus is on the way!

11. I think we are all getting a little overwrought over ALL the death in the M.E. |
|
The only think I can think of (after reading the story) is "Hmmm. 8 dead. Let's see...that's about 20% of yesterday's take of civilians in Iraq."
All a matter of perspective anymore.

38. So the US and Israel are responsible for the Syria/Lebanon conflict? |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 01:37 AM by Hippo_Tron
I don't see the connection there. Yes, the United States and Israel are partly responsible for the terrorist threats against them now. But there are internal conflicts in the Arab world as well. The Syria/Lebanon conflict is one example. Hamas and Fatah fighting in Gaza and the West Bank are another example. Israel and the United States can't be blamed for the rivalries between these factions.

to poor little ISRAEL SINCE 1949.
No more pity from me. Enough is enough. Israel has become the slime that they tried to escape from.

37. Yep, so much for democracy and all that. |
|
I can think of three general reasons for this:
1.) To threaten and/or remove an anti-Syrian politician because he was anti-Syrian. 2.) To implicate Syria, thus fending off negotiations or whatever. 3.) To create a distraction from the ongoing mess with Fatah al Islam etc.
Given the byzantine nature of Lebanese politics, it's hard to choose.
