Hey Fairfax County - please dump Rep. Tom Davis next election! |
|
After watching him in this and prior hearings, I think he is sickening. Fairfax is blue and it is time for voters to stop deluding themselves into thinking (a) he is a moderate Rethug and represents them pretty well; and (b) whatever he does re: hearings and voting record is ok, as long as he keeps sending pork home and taking care of constituents' problems. Any competent Rep. should be able to take care of problems and make sure Fairfax gets its fair share.
So dump the chump!

It will be interesting to see if his handling of Doan comes back to bite him. His district has a lot of civil service employees and he's been good at protecting their interests. The excessive partisanship that occurred at DOJ and GSA also has occurred at numerous other agencies and a lot of career government employees are sick of it. Davis would've been smart to take the side of the employees in this one, and his failure to do further undermines his reputation.
But he is one savvy pol for the most part. He attends every neighborhood event, from civic association meetings to 4th of July Parades to ice cream socials. He brings bottled water and hand held fans labelled Vote Tom Davis and he has candy for kids and dog biscuits for their pets.
I think he's beatable, but its going to be tough.

4. very good point. I hope his opponent reminds voters |
|
about his lack of principles and lack of support for them in 2008.
Retail, hand-shaking politics is powerful but I hope voters will be able to see it does not substitute for substantive voting and hearing behavior contrary to their interests and the interests of citizens in general. I hope Dems. nominate someone who will do the up close and personal stuff equally well.

5. Fairfax has voted blue in the last several Presidential and gubern. elections. |
|
Check it out, for example: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/eb/returns.htm#PreviousThere are a lot of people with money in Fairfax but just like FDR, JFK, Kerry, Edwards, etc., having money does not make you a bad person or a Republican.

As others have pointed out, the 11th District voted overwhelmingly for Kaine (D) for governor and for Webb (D) for Senator. In 2000, Gore got around 6000 more votes than Chimpy (although in 2004, Chimpy narrowly edged out Kerry). Even as Chimpy was losing, Davis was crushing his opposition in 2000, reflecting the fact that he was getting the votes of a lot of crossover Democrats and independents.
The key to representing the 11th has always been constituent service. Davis built his reputation as a member of the county council, dealing with local issues. He's tried to maintain his reputation as an "all politics is local" sort of guy, but his association with the repub leadership and his resulting support for certain positions that are not widely supported in his district has cost him. In 2006, he worked harder, and got fewer votes, than he ever had before, even though he was running against a virtual unknown.
He could have a much tougher race in 2008, assuming that he doesn't drop out or make a run for statewide office. His likely opponent is a fairly well-liked and well-known County Council Chairman and there is also the fellow who ran in 2006, Andy Hurst, who might be persuaded to give it another shot.
