Quail? In my neighborhood? |
|
Yes, that's right. A group of quail with little chickie quails tagging along in my suburban largely republican haven.
Can Cheney be far behind? We have a window that needs replacement. Guess I'll wait until the hunting party is over and replace all the windows shot out by Cheney.

He only shoots quail released from cages with their wings clipped. Actual hunting requires too much effort when you just wanna shoot your gun and kill stuff.

3. We have breeding quails in our yard almost every year. |

They're not the same birds every year but we always call them Dan and Marilyn.

4. The big house down the highway |
|
has about 30 guineas and they all waddle into our neighborhood each morning. They perform quite a symphony of quacks and grunts and shrieks. One neighbors little dog goes berserk when they are around. Its quite a noisy concert. They look almost mean and they don't care if they block the streets or not.

8. Our neighbor raises peafowl...they can put out some decibels. |
|
But we don't really hear them now unless we try to...I guess we just tune 'em out. :-)

10. We actually enjoy all the fuss |
|
We also have mockingbirds out the wazoo who are always trying to outdo one another and on occassion we can hear the train chug by about four miles to our north. We live out in the country but sometimes its godawful noisy. Its especially great in the fall when the mockingbirds get into the Holly trees and eat the berries and get drunk. Live theatre for free.

6. Don't know where you live, but we have quail families here |
|
where I live. (Don't tell Cheney.) They are really fun to watch. Papa gets up on a high bush and bosses everyone around, telling them where to look for food and if there are predators around. Watch your family cat. Adults are too fast, but they might nail one of the chicks.

7. Cheney don't hunt wild Quail. |
|
When you see someone take an over-fed half tied bird and shove it in the shrubbery you'll know he's not far behind.

Last night, leaving the Art Museum, we slowly drove past a yearling doe who watched us rather nonchalantly. This is very close to downtown Cincinnati, in a city park. Nothing unusual, actually. Please, no snarks about medium-size midwestern cities; deer, Canada geese, and coyotes seem to prefer city dining to a woodsy picnic.

16. in Ohio, Canada Geese ARE urban birds, now |
|
At least the introduced resident ones are, anyway. Canada Geese in Ohio are traditionally migrants, breeding up in Canada (hence the name). One of the ODNR's bright ideas was back when it looked like Canada Geese were headed for the endangered species list, they decided to help out the hunters and introduce some Branta canadensis to the state. However, they picked a subspecies of B. canadensis maxima that isn't migratory, so now they've become a nuisance.
Go figure.

I just love those little birds. Ours are the Gamble's quail that have the little top-knot plume. They are so damn cute!
