USA is getting the gas model next year I believe. A little bigger and not quite as good fuel economy, but still excellent.

Go test drive it. The European engineering is impressive....incredible quality. And very safe.

I got the econobox because distances are greater out here, because I often have to haul fleece and fibre, and because this is still monster truck country.

It's funny, walking around downtown, seeing them wedged into areas that were once considered too small, but now have parking meters (at reduced rates). I've been meaning to get a photo of the Mayor's, in his special reserved spot next to City Hall.

6. Brilliant. That diesel model is superb.

The gasoline models get fairly poor mileage in comparison. As much as I dislike cars, that's one great vehicle for a post supercharged world. We should have started down this path of efficiency thirty years ago.

The truck I drive weighs 4.4 Smart Cars worth. But you'd have a hell of a time towing a backhoe with a 1800 pound toy like that.

wa-a-a-y too small for my tastes. plus i do a lot of expressway driving, and i wouldn't feel safe mixed in with semi's and busses...(or even volkswagens and harleys, for that matter.)

As for space, today I took back empty beer bottles that had been stacking up....16 cases (12 packs) in the hatch area and there was room for 10 more if I stacked it to the roof.

I won't be putting furniture in it, but it's more than big enough for my needs.

The only problem I can forsee is winter driving and deep snow. They aren't exactly heavy (although the video of it on ice is sort of impressive).

And really, they are quite safe. Instead of compacting like most cars, they have more of a roll cage design to protect you. Sure, a run in with a semi might kill you....but so will running into a semi with ANY car at highway speeds.

I've had her almost a year now. She's a petrol model; I envy you the diesel & agree with your comment on the fuel economy.

As to the roominess, if *I* can drive one of these comfortably, believe me, *anybody* can!

My only gripe is that the passenger seat back can't be adjusted, but I rarely sit on that side anyway.

It really does have more space than is immediately apparent at first (or second) glance. When you're in it, you don't feel like you're in a small car at all.

My girlfriend and I had one for a couple of years. The are great for parking and there is space in the back for groceries and I have even seen dogs sitting in the back. The car is also very safe. It´s basically a miniaturized A-class mercedes (these are also not sold in the US).

We just bought a Mini Cooper D (diesel), which is a bigger car and uses 4.4 liters/100 km.....hopefully they will also bring that car to US too.

42. I got to drive one of those when I was in England!

It was so much fun, I never wanted to come back home! It really was like a motorcycle with 4 wheels, and a top. The one I was driving was a gas model and I was suprised how quick it was. The tire place up the road from me has one on display in the parking lot, but they aren't allowed to operate it on the roads as it's not "street legal", whatever that means.

You should consider running it on biodiesel. Making your own biodiesel isn't that difficult and winds up costing around 80-90 cents/gallon.
