Four States Recall Imported Toothpaste

That May Contain Poisonous Chemical

Associated Press

Tubes of toothpaste sold in discount stores in four U.S. states and labeled Colgate -- described
as counterfeit by the company -- are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical,
according to the importer of the tubes.

A Food and Drug Administration official, Doug Arbesfeld, confirmed Wednesday that testing had
found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label. But he said the agency is unsure if
it is really Colgate or a counterfeit.

"We are aware that toothpaste is something that's been counterfeited in the past," he said.
"We don't want to alarm people unnecessarily." MS USA Trading, Inc. of North Bergen, New Jersey,
said the toothpaste may contain diethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze.

The company said the toothpaste, imported from South Africa, was sold in discount stores in
New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

"Made in South Africa" is printed on the box and the batch includes Regular, Gel, Triple and Herbal versions.

The trading company said the problem was discovered in routine testing by the Food and Drug
Administration. It said no illnesses have been reported to date. The same chemical has led
to the recall of several brands of toothpaste imported from China in recent weeks.

Colgate-Palmolive issued a statement early Thursday saying the tubes are counterfeit.
The company said it doesn't use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient
in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world.

"Colgate does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa," said the
statement from Colgate-Palmolive Company. "In addition, the counterfeit packages examined
so far have several misspellings including: 'isclinically,' 'SOUTH AFRLCA' and 'South African
Dental Assoxiation.'"

"Counterfeit toothpaste is not manufactured or distributed by Colgate and has no connection
with the company whatsoever," the company said, adding that Colgate is working closely with the
FDA "to help to identify those responsible for the counterfeit product."

1. LIARS....that ingredient has been in our commercial toothpaste for years.
That's why I started to get FreeLife's toothpaste and started selling their chem-free products.

3. Cool
Bush has finally got to the food and drug agency and has put his own stamp on it. I guess he will get his wife to make his tooth paste. We could go to soda but then who can say what that is now.

5. My Colgate says
"Made in Mexico."

Maybe toothpaste-making is just another one of those jobs that Americans don't want and refuse to do.

7. Maybe it's because Palmolive doesn't want to pay living wages!!
I think that's the reason. Americans will work at those jobs!!

12. Yes and I thought I had said that but guess I just thought it.
What will these people do that want us to de-reg every thing? We live in a detailed society. We seem to like it and I can not see even these zealots that want free trade in every thing, giving up some of these safety things we have in place to live this de-reg way. A small 18th century village culture will not work with the way we live, even if looking back and for getting all the bad seems to be the answer to so many. Here is a thing that happened in a small town I lived in, in Maine. Not many wanted a zoning law. I voted for it. I saw no reason to open the town to anything goes. I was laughed at as people said no one would do that and they did not want govt. telling them what to do. So what happened? A local women(farm in the family for years and years) sold her old farm for a dump for a business from Mass. Then the town, to late, voted in a zoning law and started a legal fight. Their are always people who are bad that will use what they can to feed their greed. It seems to be as old as man is.
