Vatican urges Catholics to stop donating money to Amnesty International

<snip>
The Vatican has urged all Catholics to stop donating money to Amnesty International, accusing the human rights group of promoting abortion.

The Vatican, which regards life as sacred from the moment of conception, said it was an "inevitable consequence" of the group's policy change.
----

Is this the same Vatican that hosted the war criminal George Bush last week? Is this the same Vatican that was spewing lies about it's part in the genocide of indigenous people in South America a few weeks ago.

Fuck the Vatican. All life is valuable and no church can tell me what to do with my own body.

1. outrageous. a step backward for the Church
but, the election of the present pontiff was foreseen by many as a step backward for a lot of the reforms and allowances granted by the leadership which preceded him.

2. This is one Catholic that isn't going to give this latest order from the
Vatican the time of day. I'll donate money to whatever cause I feel deserves it and Amnesty International is definitely one of them.

3. ...and the RCC Has Cared About Women Since When?
Yawn. Get back to me when they enforce their celibacy rules - then maybe I'll give a crap about anything else they have to say.

6. True, But They Don't Have a Central Authority
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 07:50 AM by REP
edit for clarity:

There is no Protestant pope or Vatican; nor is there is Jewish pope or Vatican; nor is there an Islamic pope or Vatican. When any of these groups 1) decides to have a single authority speak for their group 2) and issues an equally hateful order, expect them to criticized just as harshly. Unfortunately, the RCC by its institutional nature has long, long history of saying one thing ... and doing the exact opposite.

11. True enough......but a lot of catholics don't have to believe..
in every thing the Pope does. Lots of hypocrisy in a lot of faiths. :)

8. May I respectfully request that progressive Catholics speak up to this
Look, the simple truth is that the reason for the Catholic position on birth control and abortion is not ex cathedra. Humanae Vitae was a Vatican Encyclical and not given as ex cathedra. As such it is just the opinion of those in charge of the Vatican and not official doctrine. It can be changed. It does not run afoul of Papal Infallibility. If the people spoke out against this position strong enough it could make a difference.

9. Amnesty replied to Vatican
The document here at
http://news.amnesty.org/index/ENGPOL300122007

The abortion and women rights are becoming a fixed idea to the Vatican...Will they ever try to get involved in something different? Will they ever bury the sword?

10. But Catholics shouldn't boycott a church that protects child molestors in its ranks?
Yeah, right
