Daniel Sandoval and Krystal Elebiary, students at
Berkeley High School, held a press conference protesting
the war in Iraq and the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Students at Berkeley High School along with an anti-war group held a press conference near the school Monday opposing the war in Iraq and a federal policy requiring student information to be released to military recruiters.

World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime and several students held the press conference on Milvia Street and Allston Way where a petition was circulated against the war and the No Child Left Behind Act.

“We sign this letter to let the Bush regime, and especially the media, know that Berkeley High School will not accept the terms that hold our future away from our hands and disregard our privacy and personal security, and that we will not be used as tools for an unjust and imperialist war,” the letter, which has been signed by 200-250 students, states.

Under the No Child Left Behind Act passed in 2002, schools are required to release student information to military recruiters. Until last month, Berkeley High School had been the last public high school in the country to withhold the information.

However, the Berkeley Unified School District decided to release the information after receiving a letter threatening to withdraw federal funds.

Instead, Berkeley High School has given students the ability to opt out of having their information passed on.

Organizers said the conference was held not just to educate students about the war and the act, but to openly display their resistance.

“The whole ideology behind the press conference was to show the resistance Berkeley High has against the unjust Bush (administration),” said Daniel Sandoval, former Berkeley High student and an organizer for World Can’t Wait. “It’s a show of resistance against the war.”

1. A nice community, Berkeley. The school board did all it could to keep the
students info private... students had to "opt-in" and say they were giving permission for their personal info to be made available to recruiters (and other groups like the PTA). But because of the "no -child left behind law" they were forced to make that info available to the military... unless students specifically "opted out".... by signing a card saying they did Not want their info released. the school is carefully informing the students of their options, and as a result only 10% of the students have not filled out a "opt-out" card, which keeps their info private.

Not much of a victory for the military recruiters here.

2. All students in the US have to 'opt out' and all the HS's
are supposed to have forms for the students to use do that!!

I had to opt my son out, in person, but the recruiters kept calling,
even after the school counselor called them and told them they weren't
supposed to be calling my house! :grr:

We are getting inundated with military recruiting info.; almost daily now, in the mail.

It goes right in the trash!

3. well i was getting that stuff even before the NCLB was passed
back in 1987 when i turned 17, even after being in the Navy for over a year my mom was still getting info from the other branches, they do that to all students but calling you and coming to your home with out being invited is another thing all together.

Then when I push them and ask who they are and what they want,
then they reveal they're recruiters. Assholes!
Some have argued with me that "this call is for **** (son's name)
and then I say, "Then call him on HIS phone!!" Click!!
(he doesn't have his own land-line) :P
