Secular Progressives check in!
The loudmouthed psychotic Bill O'Reilly throws around the term like it was an epithet. To me, it's an honorable label which we should use with pride. Being a secular progressive means we embrace the humanistic ideals of reason, justice, equality, freedom, and progress.

Freedom in its truest sense. We're free of superstition and unreasonable fear. We define freedom differently than he and his fellow ideologues, who see freedom as the inalienable right to fuck over others, consume more material goods and resources than they possibly could ever use, deny others healthcare, offer work for low wages, mask their racism as "immigration reform", or just otherwise be jingoistic chest-beating yahoos about the world in general.

Those non-secular reactionaries (not the most poetic of antonyms, but they don't deserve poetry) are people of authoritarian impulses, and are fear-ridden, superstitious, hostile to reason, science, and the humane treatment of other people and other species. Their defense of raping civil liberties, their support of torture, and their constant need to force the rest of us to bow before their invisible sky-deity is beyond mere annoyance or irritation.

So it is time to embrace being secular and progressive as virtues worth praising openly and aggressively. SP's unite! :7

I think O'Reilly misfired on that one. I doubt it will immediately arouse hostility the way other epithets the right has come up with for us.

10. Religion is the frozen thought of man
out of which they build temples.

Billo, Hitler and Mussolini etc are only the primary spokesmen
for the attitude of domination and craving for power that are
in the heart of almost everyone. Until the source is cleared,
there will always be confusion and hate, wars and class antagonisms.

It is no measure of health
to be well adjusted
to a profoundly sick society.

Checking in.

Do you mean being a progressive or democrat that doesn't believe in religion, or a progressive or democrat that is religious and has faith in God but doesn't let that faith intersect with their politics? I'm not sure exactly what the specifics are to your question.

43. I Asked You An Innocent Question. Your Response Was Pathetic.
Not sure why you answered like such an ass.

Your OP was about more than O'Reilly. You put some other stuff in there that went far broader than him alone. Why were you so sensitive about being asked for clarity about what exactly you meant? If this was just a "if you're a democrat you're an SP cause O'Reilly says so" thread, then why all the other stuff you put in the OP? That's the only reason I asked for some clarity, because I wasn't sure how deep you intended the context to go.

But to get all huffy puffy and attacking, and calling me a freeper and all that other immature bunk, is pretty pathetic in response to a genuine question. Get a grip.

42. Secular refers to the method of Governance
A sectarian approach to Governance attempts to combine religious doctrine with law. Secular eschews religious doctrine and instead leaves matters of Governance to the people based on the needs of people rather than the utterances of the divine.

84. I am not dismissing the importance of semantics
I am lamenting the fact that so often such things can prove to be the primary burden in a conversation. More often than not great disagreements come from the fact that two participants have a different understanding of the context. It would be very nice if that were not the case. But getting the semantics ironed out is typically the most important aspect of the conversation.

:7

Sweet Jesus, I hate Bill O'Reilly, International is an organization
dedicated to the dissemination of information that exposes Bill O'Reilly
for what he is: an ego-driven, biased individual who spreads fear, hate
and misunderstanding. While he sees himself as a culture warrior, his
views are firmly anchored to the political right. He works tirelessly to
enrage Americans and pit them against anything he considers "liberal"
or, worse yet, "secular". Mr. O'Reilly uses highly manipulative forms of
presentation, phrasing and, yes, "spin". Also, he's completely nuts.

Just last week I spotted a bumper sticker that read something like, "Conservative and Proud to be Everything that Annoys Liberals." I thought of a list similar to the one you give here. I thought, "So you're anti-free speech, anti-civil rights, anti-choice, anti-affordable health, anti-environment, anti-anti-lie for war, etc. etc. etc. I really couldn't think of anything a conservative would be proud to be in this day and age!

75. I am a secular progressive too!
I'd say that it's more accepted in the UK, however. E.g. we got our first openly atheist MP in 1880, and plenty of current MPs are atheists or agnostics - my MP is an official in the National Secular Society.

85. Can I be a secular progressive even though I go to church most weeks?
Extenuating circumstances: It's a Religious Science church. Its beliefs would be described as "New Thought", though ignorant knuckledraggers have been known to confuse us with (gulp) Scientology. :scared:

So since it's clearly a godless, heathen church :sarcasm: -- all we need is Fred Phelps and his "Fag Church" sign to prove it -- can I still play? Please?

86. Some religious people are secular also
They are the ones who hold what they have in common ethically with people of different faiths or no faith at all higher than they hold their own particular beliefs.

90. If you believe in God, you are not secular! (where do people come up with such ideas???)
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 11:33 AM by ProgressiveAmPatriot
Religion is faith based, a belief in something for which there is no rational evidence. Part of religion is a belief in the superiority of your religion. What would be the point of Christianity if Jesus wasn't considered special? If all Gods are equal to God, there is no God in the Christian sense. Many religious progressives adopt secular viewpoints, such as supporting world religion classes which do not make value judgments on various religions, but present their theology and culture. However, these progressives have not given up the intolerance that is at the heart of religion, they have simply ceased to act on it in the modern world. I know many progressive Christians, who share my political views, they are in many ways secular in their political outlook, and yet I (and Unitarians who are the closest to practicing what you are describing) go to hell in the end according to them. If you are a "secular Unitarian," recognize that religion is purely faith based, and believe that no religion has the monopoly on the truth, become an atheist or agnostic already for Christ sake. Because as long as you lend religious faith credence, it will pose a threat to the secular world. As long as you teach that faith alone is ample evidence for belief, you can't call religious conservatives crazy.
